I have a 92 S13 hatch that is SR swapped and was auto, but I swapped that to manual as well. Another kicker is that it has abs, but doens't have VLSD!
From what I hear, its pretty rare to have abs and not VLSD... anyway I found a good price on a alum. Driveshaft but it is a non-abs one. :-/ so i figured for the price, i can get an open diff for cheap and just swap it out.
Okay enough background, heres the quick question. Can I swap out diff's (abs non-vlsd to non-abs) with out changing out half shafts?
Thanks lot for your guys help

No. Swap the diff and output shafts.

OK I am confused
You want to swap your ABS NON LSD to not-ABS no-VLSD unit, or to no-abs VLSD?
Either way.
VLSDs output shafts are different than non VLSD.
But I think all open diffs have the same halfshafts. Unless Russ says so. :coolugh:
Give me a call, and I'll help you if I can.

Quit using the word halfshaft, it just confuses people.
Output shaft (stub axle) = piece that comes out of the diff, held in with a snap ring.
Axle = long piece that goes through the hub, bolts to the output shaft.
Axles are the same for all models, output shafts are not. Swap the output shafts and the diff asembly. Or, even easier, try fitting the driveshaft before doing any of that, you may find it to go in without issue as there's only minimal difference in length and a lot of that can be made up with adjustment of the engine and transmission mounts. I ran an ABS diff in my old car for years (and the new car now) without changing the driveshaft to fit.

russ, just curious, are the output shafts differnet on non-ABS and ABS (both open) diffs???
I figure if anyone knows its you, hehe

No. Only between the VLSD and open are they different. The gear set inside is what dictates the type of output shaft. All ABS does is add the skid sensor to the snout.
