shipping an LSD = mucho $$. they weigh something like 70 lbs dry.
'95+ J30 and z32 N/A VLSDs will bolt into S14's, and will fit into S13's after swapping rear diff covers.
On the J30 you'll have to deal with the ABS sensor though, which lengthens the diff an inch, resulting in a tighter driveshaft fit and the possibility of ruining your diff/ tranny seals. A driveshaft shop can shorten it fairly easily though, but it's been reported it fits fine... guess it's a car to car thing.
Z32 diff output shafts are not compatible with the 240sx... so you'll need new output shafts to make the Z32 diff work (VLSD output shafts... just ask for HICAS model output shafts at a dealer... but they'll cost something like $200)
Contrary to the 240sx.org install section, Q45 diffs will not swap into 240's, and neither will M30 diffs IIRC.

thanks for replying .... so let me get this straight ... the na j30 and 300zx z32 lsd work with some work... maybe shorten the driveshaft for j30 correct ... or ... buy new imput shafts with hicus for z32 one.... What about aftermarket ones, would they be just as good -im sure more $$$-if so what ones ..... thanks again?

Ok, more info here , you can use the Z32 with pre 95 J30axles for a direct bolt into our cars. I have measured the J30 axles and put them in our hubs. They work because of my research several people are now running J30 and Z32 diffs with J30 axles in our cars .
Now here is the big tip I am going to drop on you all. I found this ouut a few weeks ago. With a VLSD with the ABS sensor on the front the trick with the driveshaft is to reverse your driveshaft bolts. i.e. the driveshaft bolts are collared on the diff side i.e. a smooth surface with no threads it is exactly long enough that if you put the bolts in backwards i.e. the collar on the driveshaft side it pulls the driveshaft back just far enough for clearance.
This is another researched and tried mod it works.
So that opens more doors like no more needing to shorten driveshafts and you can use pre 95 J30 and Z32 VLSD's without having to change output shafts.

hoooray Dpro.. the resident 240sx LSD expert. <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>
That would explain why some people had issues and some didn't w/ driveshaft lengths
