View Full Version : Has anyone re-wired their sidemarker lenses?

I did this today, along with the foglight mod, as well as ambering out the front bumper lens with Tamiya Clear Orange paint. I bought clear 1156 bulbs, so they would light up better than the stock setup of clear lens/amber bulb. I also put amber 194 bulbs in the upper corner lenses. i have no plans to amber out those though.
So now when i use the turn signals/hazards/alarm, the front corners and the front sidemarkers flash in unison.
I only wired them in parallel with just a wire connecting the positive wire from the front signal, to the cut positive wire from the sidemarker.
I guess my questions are:
Why didnt Nissan do this from the factory?
I knows its simple, but how do i have the two alternate flashes? A diode, I'm assuming, i just dont know what wattage?
Am I weird for doing this, or have others done this as well?
thanks

its pretty easy to wire them up together...
but getting them to alternate flashes is a waste of time in my opinion, but for the sake of doing it/more tech info, im interested :)

I wired my alarm to where it flashes the blinkers, just how the stock alarm would. :)
IMO it looks kinda dumb, since you can't barely see the corner lamp flashing.
The reason why your getting an alternating flash, is because when your turn signals are on, the side marker gets a ground through the bulb. When the turn signal is on, the side marker light dims.
In an open circuit, if you measure across a switch you will get 12v. Now, imagine if you in place of a that switch you insert a bulb(closed circuit). The bulb turns on, and if you measure across the bulbs, you'll get reading close to 0v.
shit gonna draw a diagram brb.

i'm not actually getting an alternating flash. i was wondering how to get them to alternate.

when you find out how to make them flash and also stay on as parking lights, please post!

indeed...this is why i want them to alternate, so i can wire them to stay on as parking lights.

i just followed the 'blinky blinky' thread and my sidemarkers and corner lights alternate.

what they're talking about wont work, because the signals in my s14 only have single filament bulbs, with only 2 wires coming out of the front signal and the sidemarker. If i did what was posted, i would blow fuses because i'm creating a short to ground.

Shop is gettin busy. You're ASE certified and you can't figure out something that simple? shesh!!

gimme a break, its a matter of saving time. i dont feel the need to spend x-amount of time trying to figure out some modification to my turn signals, and if you read my first post, you would see that i suggested a diode, which NO ONE has commented on. just a bunch of links to some mod that would short my fuses. if its so simple, please help me out. :2f2f:
i understand how to do it with a dual filament bulb, people do it all the time in their honda's making their sidemarkers stay on with the parking lights, and alternate with the turn signal. its incorrect but thats besides the point. yes that is very easy to do. do it with the single filament bulbs with my s14 and you get some funny results. hazards dont work, signals stay on constantly etc etc etc.

You're completely wrong. I've done it on my Cressida, which was an 1156 bulb(single filament) and a corner lense(wedge) bulb.
You don't need a resistor/diode/transistor nothing! Just have to run the wiring a certain way.
My mistake on your ASE qualifications, thought you had A6 up there.
I actually drew up a diagram on how this worked back in college. I'll scan it if I can find it. But, if you want to try something simple, remove the ground side of the side marker, and attach it to either side of the turn signal. If one side doesnt' work, try the other.
It's REALLY REALLY simple.

i missed A6 by 2 questions 2 years ago at the beginning of my automotive schooling, i have yet to take it again. please dont be so condescending, i'm just looking for help.
the front signal has a 2 wires, and the side marker has 2 wires, one positive, and one negative. i'm sure u know that already. to get them to blink together i cut the sidemarker positive wire, and spliced the bulb side of the wire to the positve wire of the front signal. i taped off the cut positive wire to the sidemarker. simple, yes. if i just spliced that sidemarker positive wire, the turn signals would stay on constantly with the parking lights.
[edit] i didnt see that you edited your post while i was making this one, i'll give it a shot...

It's okay, I missed the the A5 by 2 freakin questions also.
BTW I'm A4/A6/A8 and L1 certified ;)

sucks man, i owned the A5 i only got 3 wrong but that doesnt mean i know everything, i still have questions just like the next guy.
[edit] back to topic, from stock (credit to AIM conversation with Ritz s14), cut the ground wire from sidemarker. tape off ground wire side that goes to car. the bulb side ground wire, run an extra wire and splice into powerside of turn signal. voila. simple. parking lights off, the signals with both blink at same time. parking lights on, they will alternate, and the sidemarker will remain on when signals are not being used.

Ok. I just did it to confirm my theory.
But this thing is super duper complicated. Seriously man, you'd have to be a genious(like myself) to figure this out.
Ok. Ready?
Cut the black wire off of the side marker. Tape off the harness end. Now take about 12" of wire, and tap it in to the green wire on the turn signal. TAP, do not cut off.
Done!
Now with the parking lamp off, the lamps will blink in unison. With the parking lights on, they'll alternate.
Boom, done. Two minutes, literally. If it takes you longer than that, jump off a cliff. :)

I guess I'm on my way to the top of a cliff...
because I soldered them together ...lol
anyway, Ritz S14 is exactly right. Mine blink in unison when the parking/headlights are off, but when they're on (at night), they alternate. Looks kinda dumb from the side since the rear blinker is on while the sidemarker is off, and they alternate. oh well...

OK guys,
Please don't flame me cause I'm new here, but I've done this tons of times in my old Integra, and my friends cars, but the correct way to do this is with a relay. The diagram below explains how to wire it.

I forgot to mention how this blinks.
Basically, the sides won't blink when the parking lights are off. But when the parking lights are on, they will stay on, but when you blink, the blinker and the sidemarker will alternate.

This whole thread is gay. A sidemarker shouldn't be on at any time because it looks like ass. Paint over it or fill it in.
