ok so when i try to convert to mp3, it doesn't compress the file at all... it's still quite a large file... what do you use and why are my files not smaller?

if your player supports wma format use that. If it plays mp3 files you have to burn it as data.

I use Windows Media Player to rip mine to the computer, and I rip at 128, and I have had no issue with it making the files smaller, perhaps you should look into the settings of whatever you are ripping with.

I use NeoAudio, very simple and straight forward.

there is an issue of sound quality when ripping at rates lower than 128 kb/sec. it may be okay for portable mp3 players or for car audio but it sounds like crap in high end home audio systems or computers with high end sound cards and speakers.

varible bit rate sounds okay as well - as long as your player supports it.

neoaudio works for me also
