I've boarded a few times. My friends swear by K2, but I think a board is like a good racing seat. You have to get out there and sit in a couple (strap on the bindings in this case) to find the one that's best for you. Good luck, and make sure your slap a Zilvia.net sticker on the board. That means you can drift the snowboard! :rawk:

Snowboarder right here champ!

I rock an Element all wood snowboard......it was around $500 but well worth it. I use a Sessions fitter....good stuff man! Don't scimp out on the fit because it's going to keep your ass warm when you fall!

alright, there are certtain things you should know first. There are good and bad ones for all different price ranges. A longer board will be better stability going downhill but a shorter board is better for tricks and easier to spin. for good bindings that are descently priced, check out ride bindings. they have a metal base and check out the ride lx model. those have pleased lots of people. boots are a lot of you get what you pay for often with those. there are normal tie boots that are the cheapest otherwise there are the fancy ones with gizmos for a few hundred bucks.

burton and k2 are top of the line stuff...
i'm riding an Option snowboard this year, and so far i've been very pleased with it.
also step-in bindings/boots are alot faster and easier to use. i use burton step in boots/bindings. they are very adjustable, and the only draw back is that the boots are a little heavier than regular strap on style boots.

ive been riding for about 8 years now, mostly just freeriding as of late.

dont spend a lot of cash on a board right off, chances are you are gonna do some damage running into things, especially if you get into woods riding. make sure you get a board wide enough for your feet. im a size 12/13 so it was fun finding a smaller board with a width like that. cheaping out on clothes usually comes back to bite you in the ass on wet days.

i hope it snows more soon...

love snowboard
hate mtn high

i have nitro board, don't know what boots/bindings,
but i'd recommend straps instead of click ons, much more comfy for me, the boots are also less stiff, just my opinion...
start off w/ shorter boards (but not too short, or else you won't be going anywhere = not moving on flat spots), but its easier to control...

it's exponentially much more fun once you get better, especially when you go faster and/or go into the terrain parks (if you're really into those kinda stuff)...

rule of thumb when purchasing a snowboard is to buy one right about chin height give or take a few inches as someone said, shorter =freestyle, longer =free riding...

go to Tri-City in Fremont and check out eVERYTHING they have there....check out all the bindings and boots accordingly to the bindings.....like someone else said, dont buy the most expensive board, but dont also buy the cheapest board from Big 5 or whatever..... I havent been boarding for the last 1.5 years now, so i dunno what new "hot" stuff is out, but i loved the Flow bindings, those things were so light and easy to use...TRi-City employees in the snowboarding dept. usually know what they are talking about.....also most skateshops, NOT MALLSHOPS have good knowledge of snowboards, i.e. Skateworks, Sessions, No Control Boardshop

You should do those "upgraded" rentals and try out a different board and binding combos(no step-ins). Once you find a style of riding you like, you can ask folks at the sporting goods store for board recomendations. Tricity, Helm of Sunvally, and Mel Cottons have the most knowledgeable sales people IMO.

And step-in binding suck. The boots are heavy, snow can get packed into the base making it difficult to get locked in, and you just don't get as much response as you do with flows or strap-ins.
Go with Flow's or strap-ins.

Monday was the first day I've ever gone snowboarding. I went at it pretty hard, and I felt it over the next 2 days.

Here's my board, it's a Ride board, from the Decade line. Ride bindings, and I've got Thirty Two boots.

When you fall dont try and catch yourself, unless you want to get hurt. Good rule of thumb is if you are going to fall find the nearest skiier to break your fall.

Anyways im on a SantaCruz board, ride bindings, oakley a-frames, and burton boots. My boots are old and crap, i need new ones. The binginds are awsome, They are ride lx. Easy to get in and out of, and ive never had trouble with snow getting jammed in there like my old sims. Best binding for the money. I paid $90 2 years ago for them.

My board is chin height, LOL chinh chinh chinh(Pick up your wheels you homo.) It use to be big for me when i first got it, but now its just right. Its a 156. I say go with a short board, but whatever you do dont get a wide all mountain board. Those thing suck ass and are so sluggish.

Remember hit nearest skiier!

bahahha....

actually if its your first time its a good idea not to ride the "intermediate/black diamond" courses, duh....and be courteous of traffic, boarders and skiers will just fly by you so please be aware of your surroundings....i hate it when fucking noobs lay in the middle of a path and start getting up without looking BEHIND them or waiting for a safe moment:mad:

^^^ dah i know what you mean. I usually ride green and blues when im with friends. Last weekend when i went to sierra my gf was just chillen in the middle of the run, i started to yell at her because its stupid to sit there. Dangerous and not courteous at all. I make sure whenever i rest that its off to the side, where there are no jumps or anything so i dont get in peoples run.

But yeah i just gotta throw my hate out there for the skiers. Some lame fuck came across the moutain and purposely splashed snow on me while i was sitting down. I mean wtf man? I got up and started yellin at him but he got away. Some friends that i was with had the same thing happen to her and she got all crazy and chased after him. Was pretty funny. They are just lame i hate it.

so i'm the only skateboarder who hasn't been snowboarding. part of the reason is that snow boarding is seasonal and sakeboarding is anytime when it doesn't rain. i've been skateboarding off and on now for 9 years and all of my friends that snowboard say i'd be pretty good at it. i ask them what kinda tricks they do and they say all they do is go down hills and slopes. is that really fun? i don't find much excitement bombing down hills on my skateboard - maybe i'm a park rider then. what's the best snowboard park closest to socal?

YES! I also have the Ride LX, and they don't get clogged for SHIT. My board length is also a 156, and I like it, I learned a good deal my first day.

As far as hitting skiers...most of them seemed to enjoy swooping in front of me, then falling right in front of me, and yelling as if I was supposed to stop instead of clobbering them with the tail of my board when I carved the other way. It happened twice.

thats what most people think, if you've skated you'll think you'll have no problem getting on a snowboard...well thats not entirely true.....snowboard control is alot different from skateboarding...I've been skating on and off for the last 9 years or so too...

It's just a fun and free spirited cruising down slopes and off trails and such, all that snow in your face, the awesome weather....hitting rails and tables tops is fun too, also doing grabs and spins off of jumps are fun....i keep telling myself i should attemp backflips but i chicken out at the last moment, ahha...

you can't go wrong with what I have...
burton board (bullet)
burton cartel binding
burton snow boots
northface snowpants
northface jacket
northface gloves
northface thermals

I waste as much money on cars as i do on snowboarding
if you really into it.
i would get the burton vapor ($1000 board, nice and flexible for tricks) my bro has one. and burton p1 carbon binding, really cool stuff

My friend has a full carbon fiber board, which I think is pretty cool.

Snowboarding sounds sweet, but it's a rather expensive hobby.

Spend $500 getting all the gear, then add lift tickets, gas money, tire chains... and after two seasons you're looking at the equivalent of a set of WedSport TC005s. Yikes.

gears can be reuse for more than one season, buy all the good stuff off hand and you are set.

if you go to those snowboard show/conventions.. about $15-20, you get a pass.. sometimes with no black out dates (save about 50%)
get a season pass at the convention as a student is way cheap... plus there one my sister got that applys not just to northstar but sierra too.

northstar is fun, but sierra is better.

telling a person who just got into the sport to buy a $1,000 board is the WORST advice i have ever seen.

i have big feet so i needed a wide board. i love my Ride Yukon, its really responsive and quick reacting for a wide board. i have Drake Matrix bindings which i highly recommend, Drake makes some great bindings. and Northwave boots. brands don't matter as much as the quality of the stuff because all brands have their good stuff and shitty stuff. so to the kid who said Burton and K2 are top of the line, pay no attention to him. Burton's and K2's high-priced stuff is nice, but the lower grade stuff is trash. I had a Burton Floater and it sucks. My friend has a Burton Canyon (their expensive wide board, more than the Ride Yukon) and i like my Ride Yukon MUCH MUCH more.

+1 for San Jose avid Snowboarder...

down for a zilvia bay trip... ([email protected])

A little advice to those newcomers to the sport, IMO, you should rent from a resort, local, or any shop along the way to try it out for the first time... But buy the snow gear before you go... cause most of the times people love it the first time, and buying snow gear pays itself after several future trips

As stated many times, when purchasing a board, I prefer about lip height, and I like it wide... Many different types of boards out there so beware which style u want to venture into.. Speed, Freestyle, etc..

TIPS WHEN ON THE SLOPE:

When you fall, it is human nature to catch ones self with his/her wrists, and hands, DO NOT.. i repeat DO NOT catch urself in this manner, it could lead to more possible injuries.. the safest method to fall IMO is to tuck your hands and cross your arms across your chest.. Keeping your wrists and hands safe is important.

Another good tip is when you fall, it is to try to get back up on your feet and move off to the side as stated earlier. Not only out of common courtesy by as well as your wel being and the other coming down fast as well.

And the last tip I can give would have to be about getting off the ski lift. (Noobie's Death Zone) IMO, it will get easier as it gets more repetitive.. But try to get a good balance and weight distribution before you stand up. Then as you get up.. let the lift kind of nudge you forward as you proceed down. Keeping the back foot on the stomp pad, keep good balance and dont cling ontop ppl beside you..

Practice makes perfect! Always... and be safe! Always know your limit...

Happy Seaons!

he dont have to take my advice, you never know, but he might like it better than it all. the vapor is a light weight board with good flex for tricks. i used it and it really nice.
if he starts out, why not start with one of the best?
you might like the yukon, i aint ragging on you making that decision.

After being at Sugar Bowl last weekend when there was heavy rain all over the bay, my first priority is clothing. The blizzard last sunday was pretty crazy for me...the falling snow felt like hail...

thanks

it was hail =) as for your gear, I really recommend going to Tri - City during the summer when they are trying to push all of their gear out of the store.

Just buy whatever style suits you but for a decent price range. As for goggles, I really like Oakleys. For masks, anything that has a mask + hoodie is a great advantage. For jacket wise, thats where the variety is so huge, but the pricerange keeps you limited.

Pants wise, if you ski, the suspenders are the ones that are ideal for you, but for snowboard, anything goes.

Gloves are the second most important gear you need next to goggles and pants! Get really good gloves in my opinion. Cold hands in really cold weather isnt pleasent to have...

Hope that helps.. Later

thanks it helps a lot, you just hit me with some common sense...to wait for the off season. I think I remember seeing snowboard pants for 75% off during the spring...

but I'm only going to be in Davis for a little while longer, where it's only a couple hours away from the mountains. I guess I'll just try to look for some sales and online coupons.

anyway, were you at Sugar Bowl over the weekend?

when you are looking at outerwear, check out the waterproofing and breathability ratings. any decent manufacturer should list the specs, if not, look elsewhere. if you are expecting lots of wet days, look for a waterproofing rating of 10,000+ with taped/sealed seams. i would pass on anything under 5,000 for normal conditions. good breathability also helps on the warmer days. zippered vents on underarms and thighs come in handy. pick up gore-tex gloves/mitts if you value dry hands.

i went last sunday, rained the entire time (6+ hours). i had on some 10,000/10,000 pants, gore-tex mitts, and an old shell. legs and hands were completely dry, arms were soaked.

I bought Burton gear about 6 years ago and it still rides like new. Burton Custom board size 157 (I'm 5'9") with some ultra ill Shaft graphics on front and back (ur damn right). The graphics are so cool that I never put a stomp pad on the face. Besides that I got Burton step ins and special Burton step in boots, too. People hate on step ins but my Burtons are great. If you got skills you can get off the lift and step right into the binding and go!!

Snowboarding is fucking sublime. I been doing for nine seasons since I was 14. The major thing to learn for beginners is how to slow down and stop. Everything else comes after that. Once you know you are in control of your speed you will naturally learn how to change direction next. It will take a few seasons but the payoff is worth it. Now I carve manji style goin left, right, left right and flyin down the mountain. Some people like to take it easy and make wide sweeping turns but I like going as fast as possible. It's great only drifting has really matched the fun factor for me, besides knockin boots.

Did you see a bunch of guys with boards launching off a kicker by a cabin on the right about 5 minutes before getting to Sugar Bowl?
