When i shift from 5th to 3rd, a horrible high pitch sound comes out, and i cant shift into the 3rd gear. i'm pretty sure that the dog-teeth are being fu*ked up at the moment...weird thing is, it ONLY happens when i shift from 5th to 3rd. not 2 to 3, not 4 to 3, not 1 to 3...only 5th to 3th...and it doesnt happen everytime i shift it...it just happens randomly..(?!?)
can anyone tell me what could be wrong about the transmission? thanks.

Are you double clutching? If not, that should solve the grind. What rpm are you downshifting to?
You should NEVER hear a grind up-shifting unless your syncros are completely shot or you're not using the clutch.

rev-matching does solve the problem, however, since i was using my clutch while downshifting, it shouldn't grind...btw it was about 3000rpm when i was downshifting..
so is my syncros dead already? <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/huh.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=''>
K, I'll say it differently in hopes that you reply <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>
Why are you shifting from 5th to 3rd??

high pitch sound as in the engine speed matching transmission speed? being more specific would help, though it may be difficult.

like... if that high pitched sound is a grinding noise... you're fucking the tranny up <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':p'>
could be bad synchros?

yah that "high pitch sound" is actually a grinding noise....i think the dog-teeth are being fu*ked up by bad synchros...
so can anyonw tell me how much it's gonna cost me replaceing those bad synchros? parts+labour?
thanks...

dog teeth? you mean the synchros or hellical gears in the trans?
when u say high pitch do u mean a whineing noise or a grinding noise?
to rebuild a trans? hmm if u can find a competant shop to do it might cost u 400 the least? i dont treally know though thats an expensive rebuild with parts and all.
theres abundant trans for 240's why not just replace the whole thing thats a cxheaper alternative. all the sr swap people sell the engine and trans together

Syncros can't "grind"
Tranny re-builds are quite expensive, if u are just replacing the clutch, seals and bearings you're looking at $900. I don't know how hard it is to do yourself but I didn't try it (daily driver.)
Don't forget that those "new" trannys off of sr20dets are used; and you never know what they did to it before you got it; it may be worse than yours.
There is probably nothing wrong with your tranny, most people aren't going to recognize your problem because we wouldn't skip a gear on a downshift without rev-matching. I think that you should just learn to double clutch, it'll take a week to learn the basics and if u learn to heel-toe then maybe a month. It's totally worth it in the end, driving is much more fun.
