alright i recently got a sr....like the person i got it off of said he ran a compression check and the engine is good....and told me to trust him....(i buy stuff off of him all the time+ its my friends uncle) anyways umm i checked the sparkplugs when i got home... and the first cylinder had quite a bit of oil in it and the chamber where the spark plug came out of had oil all on the sides... the 2nd,3rd and 4th had a clean chamber but the sparkplugs had a tad of oil on them....
does anyone know what could be wrong? and if my motors bad? the apperance of it is pretty clean...no leaks or anything...

do a leakdown test and a compression test. that will tell you alot.

It could be something as simple as spark plug well gaskets that need to be replaced. If these are bad, they will allow oil to leak into the combustion chamber. But like drifter808 said, a leakdown and compression test will tell you alot. You can make a leakdown tester easily. I did a little write up here:

nice info....but like the engine isnt in the car yet?... how does that work??

it works exactly the same.
to set piston positions, put a breaker bar on the crank pulley and spin the engine, which is what you would've been doing if the engine was in the car anyway.

i just talked to the guy i bought it from...he said not to worry because he just put some oil in it because the engine has been sitting there for a while...is this a common thing to do?

regardless of what he said, i would do a compression and leak down test anyway.
better to find out now then find out after spending a day or two installing a crapped out engine.

o ok....umm...btw would u happen to have steps on how to do the tests... not make the tools?
-thanks

check the valve cover gaskets..... might have a break in it

hmm...should i listen to the guy that i bought it from and put it in and start it up and see if the oil burns away or more leaks in?and fix it while the motor is in my car
or should i open it up right now and see if theres a problem?

Open it up now. Yes its ok that he put oil in it. If you don't know what your doing, take it to someone who does. To leak down test it, your going to have to put each cylinder at TDC on the compression stroke, so the valves are closed. Start with piston one and work your way through the firing order. You wouldn't want to go through the complete swap to find out that the engine is no good, and have to pull it out would you?

ok just did the compression test....i got 150 all across after 3 cranks....so i guess the engine is good and i was just over reacting =P
-thanks for all your input guys

did you do a leakdown to? You can get pretty different results between the two. Im not trying to scare you, but i had the same results once for compression and then did a leakdown and it was 70% in the #1 cylinder. The engine is probably good, but to be certain take the time to do a leakdown.

nah i didnt do a leakdown test...i dont really know how...and i dont think i know anyone that does =\...

You really shouldn’t have bought an SR, you obviously don’t know much about vehicles in general. Do a leak down test, no more than 15% leak on the gauge, and it will tell you everything, with then engine out of the car how are you cranking it over?

But come on man, he doesn't know how or know anyone that does. Ah whatever it's just an engine.

yes it's common. the importer that i used to work for use to do that.

when i got my SR, first thing i did was put some marvels mystery oil in the cylinders, gave it a few turn overs by hand. little oil in the cylinders helps keep it rust free if its going to sit for a while.

how did you get to the conclusion that i dont know much about vehicles in general? its not like im asking a stupid question or anything...btw..how else are you suppose to learn, if you dont ask questions?:gives:

wat are good and bad numbers as far as compression results for an SR anyways...i just bought clip and the company said that the compression test came back with the motor at 175psi on all 4 and should be above 200psi with a wet test.
