hi
i just pounded out a large dent on the side of my car, and want to use some body filler to make it more even.
before i do this i am going to stone it to make it more smooth.
here is a pic of it in its current state.
http://img8.picsplace.to/img8/2/thumbs/thor_RIP.jpg (http://img8.picsplace.to/img.php?file=img8/2/thor_RIP.jpg)

then i was searching and asking around, apparently this stuff here is better then bondo, and is used by proffesionals too.
www.evercoat.com
then go to products, automotive, if i post a direct link the link dies, i dont know why.
my question was if i needed to putty the dent first to make it even, or if i just go straight to premium body fillers.
the one i was planning on using was the one thats really easy to sand. its thier easiest sandingf one i guess.
just wondering what exactly i needed to do about that. i dont know if its similair to bondo where you can just slop that stuff right on the dent after its been sanded or what.

thanks alot
matt

holy replace a panel batman. in order to use body filler, the damage can't protrude above where the sheetmetal was stock. and from there i would find someone with years of experience to do it right. at least that's what i'm in the middle of.

Go easy on the submit button next time, sdtouge. I deleted your double Thread.

I would also suggest a proffessional for that level of damage. Unless it's really not that bad and the crappy picture is just making it look worse.

sorry to jack the thread, but i didnt want to make a new one since this is on body work... now would a collision something like this would bend the chassis?

i don't feel nearly so bad about my little sideswipe now. to see if has bent the frame you would have to visually inspect for major buckeling on the frame. also there is tell tale sighns of buckeling on the front and rear pillars. it it has buckled there, there hay be some minor/major frame work. but I am no estimator, just having working in a shop for a few years/done a little bodywork. strip it down and check.

sdtouge:: you should pull out the dent as much as possible and use like fiberglass or filler....that should be fine...just sand it down before you fill it up

Body work and sheetmetal fabrication is an art, some can do it some cant.
I can tell you this you have some work cutout for you. You can even your odds by going with professional grade products from the start. You should be able to find a body shop supply company in your area without a problem. They will have all you need. Be ready to shell out some bucks though, also prep work is key. You may need to spend several hours with a hammer and dolly to get your panel ready for filler. With your hammer work a little goes along way, meaning don't go in there and wack the crap out of the pannel, work small. You might look at some sheet metal fabrication books to see just what is possable. I have seen some of these metal masters hand build a panel that needs no filler. Hope I have helped

Good luck

dude u still got more pounding to do... i can tell u that and dont thin out the metal so that it flexes by ur finger touch

MrBrightSide maybe by popping ur hood and checkin the fram rails to see if there tweaked u would know, also check the door and fender gaps if its diamond then obviously u might need a frame pull

yeah some areas i may drill and pull

i need to figure out where i can buy those those stone things.
anyone know where i can get them, or what the technical name is?
its like a round stone and a bean bag type thing to hold the bag to the inside and then smack it with the stone and it makes it smoother, the dent is all dimply and shit right now.
also
i was planning on using that evercoat stuff i hear its alot better then bondo...
this, and then painting the car (just spray paint of some sort for now), then gutting/sound deadaning was mostly my plan for winter break. i have finals this week and some next week, then im off till about the 17th i beleive. so i have some time to work with this.
also i am planning on buying a smaller mig welder and welding the seam panels, but i dont know if im comfortable welding sheet metal to the side of my car yet...

basically i think this just needs alot of tlc, and filler.
filler i can buy
and tlc i have alot of time and patience to give, as well as power sander:)

thanks for all the help guys, and keep it coming!

edit
ill try to take more pics of the progress/final product so you guys can laugh/ or be impressed.
most likely the first one, but im hoping got the second one.

you dont just start filling it like that. you need to do more work on it by pulling the dents and hammering. you need to get it as stock as possible. grind it down, then fill it with 1/16 thick layer of body filler. sand the filler and spray surface primer, more sanding and spray the last primer and prep it for paint.

body filler isn't to cover up or fill dents. that's ghetto. drilling to pulling is ghetto too. you need to get the tool that welds tabs to the body and uses a sliding hammer to pull the dents.

go to autobody101.com
evercoat is good body filler and what i use on my car. bondo is junk.

brightside, yes.

dolly aka metal contoured block......... be careful tho when usin that it flattens ur sheetmetal

!Zar!

whats a dolly?
A dolly is used with a hammer on the other side of the panel you are hammering that way you flatten the dent instead of just pushing the dent on the other side.

Another tool you might look into is a shrinking disk. Basicly it is a stainless disk that bolts on your angle grinder that heats up the metal as it spins, then you quench the panel with water to shrink it. google it there are several how to videos. It is like magic.

Good luck

should i just ger rear over fenders?

i have wheels sitting in my garage that would need a small spacer
why not just get a big bolt on spacer and rear over fenders.

i also found a donor car for welding on a new panel if you guys think that would be easier....

over fenders is easier...........
i dont think ur skilled enough to weld on a quarter panel and do some heavy duty body replacement yet..... but what ever works for u go for it
