View Full Version : which are better coilovers, KTS or silkroads?

Silkroads are slightly more expensive, but it seems the two coilovers are very similar. Both have inverted monotube fronts, around the same amount of dampening adjustment, and have gotten great reviews from its owners. They both come with 8/6 kg spring rates. Also, both are onsale on zilvia! So I'm wondering, are the silkroads worth the extra $250?
Keep in mind that this is just for daily spirited driving.

tight on money get kts...
Drug dealer with a lot of $... get silkroads.
for me i spent a little more and got the silkroads
reason... reputable company/name brand, jdm bling, rides very comfortable for coilover when daily driven, but when you drift there no body roll at all.
love them since
john
either one you get though there both really good so it really does not matter.

:boink: do you want to buy an 8th or a gram.
I have silkroads on my personal car ive been driving for over a year now and i love them. Broad dampening adjustment... hold up to shitty weather well. Lots of adjustment in height also.
Ive sold countless sets of these and have had nothing but GREAT reviews from my customers.
+1 SILKROAD!

You cry in pain as your friends with kts' get brand new coils while you have to send yours in for rebuild and wait days and days for them back?
I haven't had a chance to drive on the silkroads yet but when I ran the kts' overall feel was pretty nice. But as a choice between the two, I would rather have little to no down time for rebuild and just get the kts. Who knows whenever I see 007pang I might switch? Overall the spl/kts are so great I want another company to do better than them. But I find them hard to beat imo.

the camber bolt adjustment plate....there are 3 ways you can mount this, so think of it as x's 3 of what your current camber adjustment can do..
also i think the Silkroads have less dampening click adjustments (easier to use) than the KTS...and if you need anything for the coilvoers such as rebuilding or replacement parts, the turn around time straight from JAPAN is extremely quick

The KTS are only 15 levels of dampening. . .I don't know how coils could get significantly less "dampy"

hmmmm... I've been in both, KTS and silkroads, both have a nice ride with not much bodyroll. I was hoping for more of a technical analysis, like which one is certifiably better or did better in a shock dyno. Most responses were just that whichever coilover they had, they recommended. But I guess I can't go wrong with either coilover. So I think I am goin to choose KTS since I am on a budget, dunno if silkroads are worth the extra $250 as I'm broke.

The 250 is probably better spent towards a set of sway bars. Both are very good coilovers.

As of yet we havent had to have a set rebuilt. Typically the shipping to Japan and back with a week or so layover there would be 4-6 weeks right now. That is just an estimate but I will definately look into it for you. Thanks
Doesnt look that quick to me.

I've had KTS for about a year and a half. Never ridden on Silkroads, but personally I wouldn't buy a coilover I needed to ship out to have rebuilt. Downtime is shitty even if only a week or 2.
I replaced a shock in my KTS 2 weeks ago, $135 for the shock only took 15 minutes.
Sidenote: Make sure to use the dustboots on the KTS ones (or any coilover for that matter), I bought mine back when they weren't included, hence the blown rear shock after about 16 months.

I bolded patience for a reason.
On the features, like someone said the camber bolt, but its 4 ways adjustable. The top bolt that mounts to the spindle is notched and has a plate that has 4 varying lengths.
It serves two purposes.
1) Camber adjustment. It allows for more camber w/o adjusting the camber plates. Currently mine is on the 3rd from the furthest in and I have 3 degrees of camber and didnt mess with the plates. So its good if you want to be a camber whore.
2) Wheel clearance. Because of where it adjusts it makes the strut sit closer to the wheels, or further. In my case it was on the 4th setting (most camber) and my 9.5 +12 wheels didnt fit but changed it to setting 3 and they do now.
I am not sure if the 1st setting is any further out than a non-slotted coilover though...
A freind of mine will be shock dynoing a couple coilovers in January, so I am going to loan mine for the test, hopefully we'll get DDs, Silk Roads, HEs, and Zeals.

Everyone has made good points on this subject. We have been the Silkroad distributor in the US for over 2 years now, and I have not had anyone that needed the RMA8's to be rebuilt. For that reason I really can't say "how long" the rebuild would take. I have emailed Silk in Japan and I am waiting for a response as to the turn-around time for rebuilding. If there are any other questions about our product line please email me personally at
[email protected] I check emails everday. Thanks again.

I'll get some coilies this summer again. Hopefully, those new Tanabe sevens will become more affordable or another set of coilovers will be the "next" big thing for 240s.
