View Full Version : Red line for a KA?

The KA Midget is back.
The pickup I got my KA out of didn't have a tach in it, so I'd really like to know what the red line for a stock KA is since I finally got a tach for it.
How do you post pics here? I've got some pics of my car I'd like to post.

S13 or S14 KA?
Useful redline depends on which motors (different cams)...but use ~6500 as a safe redline for now...although ~7000rpm is no big deal. That's not to say you'll be making power up there, but it won't fly apart due to exessive piston speeds.

OK, I'll assume a late model Frontier? Maybe a D21? SOHC or DOHC?
Nonetheless, truck cam(s?) will be geared for low end, so use ~6000rpm as a good redline.
The bottom end of all the KA's are quite similar, and that's what really limits RPM...but for your purposes, 6k is safe, and you'll most likely not make power above that...so why push further?

there is absolutly no reason to take that motor over 5600, If you look at a dyno sheet you will see that power peaks and drops off after that. There is no need to rev the piss out of a KA, it just makes more noise.

Youll hit the limiter right around 7200. If your sliding your car around you will definatly need to rev past 5600.

I hit the limiter at 6400 on the dyno.

Oops sorry I have a JWT ecu. I forgot I had them move the limiter, its been a few years.

When accelerating in 1st gear it is useful to take it up to redline so when you shift you are still in the power band...

Cool, my wife rolled the pickup (90 model, sohc in case anyone's interested) so I stuffed the whole drivetrain into a MG Midget (I started out with just the engine and tranny but the midget rearend only lasted about a week before giving up all of it's gear teeth).
I'm not sure if the 240 and the pickup used the same trans. or even rear end gears, but knowing a general redline helps.
The cam in this is definitely made for lower RPMs, it makes power to about 5600 or so, then kinda falls off, but in a 1600 pound car it doesn't matter all that much.

No need to rev a KA above 5600 rpm as this the KA makes most of its power and torque lower in the RPM range (which what I like about the KA) and is a VERY durable engine at low revs because it is a light truck engine. The downside is that revving to high too much may throw a connecting rod as that seems to be the KA achilles heel from what I hear from downs that have done multiple rebuilds on their KA's

True if your just accelerating, but there are times where youll need to rev past. I havnt thrown a rod yet... :o But when I do I hope it punches a BIG hole.

i think s13's have a higer rev limiter than s14's, but my 91 with a jwt is at 7200, when i bounce the rev limiter i think it would proablly go higher. but i have intake header ecu, used to have cams, etc.
