oil smoke is usually blue, and it stinks.
white smoke is probably coolant that's entering the cylinder/combustion chamber, as a result of a leaking head gasket.
if it is sweet smelling, than its coolant. good luck <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/thumbs-up.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=''>

I'd assume it's a bad headgasket or worse--- a warped or cracked head.

mine does the same thing but it does go away after driving it.....when i start it up it is pretty a pretty quick flowing exhuast and then i rev it before driving the smoke becomes overwhelming and when i floor it pulling out into traffic i can see smoke out of my rear view mirror...... but it does go away after driving.... so i wonder what it is also.....

in order to find out what is really wrong here is a mandatory list that is needed to find the problem:
check compression--low or loosing compression can be from blown headgasket, worn piston rings
check spark plugs--black or white or gunky looking can be from blown head gasket, worn pistons, worn valve seals
check oil---grey color or even a milky look to it can be from a blown head gasket, water pump, timing chain cover leak
these will help u
but from past experience it is problaby a blown headgasket

head gasket removal and installation is pretty straight forward; I've never done the ka but have participated in a few POS vans <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt='???'>
Hey, what about rusty spark plugs? I've never seen reference to it before...

a leak down test will tell you where it is leaking from.

gray smoke and smells like shit means you have engine oil in the exhaust (trust me i know this, i tried to failed the smog test on my camry... well, it's smoking too much and too ovbious, so i'm not smoggin it anytime soon)
but white smoke usually means you are running lean. that's all i know about smoke...

Uh, yeah, what he said.
Headgaskets are cheap, 30-50 bucks. It isn't the easiest thing to install, though, so anticipate a good chunk of labor pay.
