View Full Version : B&M Shifter Issues

I've got a B&M shifter that worked perfectly on my KA24DE. However, upon putting it on the CA18DET, it refuses to work properly. To get it to fit I had to remove the shifter, plate, and those side springs to rotate the stick, since it somehow got rotated the wrong way. However, even after doing this, the car won't go into gears 1-3 or R. It just sits halfway there, and comes right back out with the slightest tap.

Now with the stock shifter in, the transmission goes into all gears with no issue. However, I lost some part in the shifter that actually holds the shifter into the transmission and prevents it from just being pulled up and out of the linkage, so that's not an option.

Now the only thing I'm unsure on with the installation of the B&M is those four allen bolts that hold that black retaining plate onto the top of the shifter plate. My thought was that if I tightened those down all the way I'd do away with the "B&M Rattle." However, upon retrospect, is there some amount of slack I'm supposed to leave in between the black plate and the regular plate? That was the only thing I considered that might be an issue in keeping the shifter from fully going into 1st, but I have no idea just how much clearance to leave between the plates, if any.

Can anyone help me out here?

Ok, so I went and loosened that thing, and now the OPPOSITE gears won't go into gear. What am I doing wrong here? Every other shifter works fine, but the B&M seems to not work anymore.

could it be issues with the bushing on the end of the shifter?

I don't believe the B&M works with the CA tranny. IIRC, only the KA, SR, and RB20(not 25 or 26) will accept the B&M shifter.

The bushing fits in perfectly. The shifter bolts up perfectly. And last I checked, all three of the 4 cylinder engines use the same transmission, save for gearing. Also, the CA stock shifter works just fine on the KA transmission, and a KA shifter I snagged for testing works perfectly on the CA.

If it really doesn't fit though, what's a good short shifter that would work for the CA?

Edit: Part 45088 is used for all of the SRs. The SR and KA shifter are interchangeable. This same part is also used for the 88-99 180SX, which used the CA18DET, so it has to fit. I just accidentally screwed the shifter somehow.
