im totally ignorant when it comes to wheel offsets. ive been doing something reading but i am still a bit unclear so please dont flame on me. im getting the 5 lug and the z32 brake conversion for an 89 s13, im also looking at some 17x9.5 ssr comp. with the offset of 42mm. that should have no clearance problems right? what if i upgrade the brakes to the brembos later on. thanks for ur help.

How far away is the mounting pad from the rear face of the wheel?

And those offsets suck. Need lower.

ok well take the center of the wheel. Say its a 8" wheel. if the wheel has 0 offset then the mounting point (the point where the wheel bolts to the hub) is exactally in the center with 4" of rim on each side. +42 moves the mounting point 42mm closer to the outside of the car. that gives you about 2.4" of lip on the outside of the rim from the mounting point. Z brake clearence has little to do with offset and more to do with spoke and wheel design. Meshies have a hard time clearing usually because of a flat surface (the side of the wheel facing the caliper). Some wheels have a better design where the spoked shoot out more, giveing you more clearence. Offset does help because if you have a lower offset, the rim face is further away from the brake caliper, but it is usually more important to have first had expirence with the rims in question. Also if your rims dont clear you can awlays get spacers. I had to get a 9mm spacer for my TE37's to clear. They have better +35 offset also.

You'll probably have clearence problems in regards to suspension, and they WILL RUB when you turn. For one thing, You are running a huge width, and with that much offset, almost all that extra width will be stuffed inboard. The width is fine for the rear, but something like a 30mm offset in the rear with a slight pull would be much better than 42mm. 9.5" is too wide for the front. A 9" would be much better, and even then it will be a very tight fit, unless you have wide fenders. I recommend saving one pair of 9.5's as an extra set for the rear, and getting 10 mm spacers for the rear. For the front, an 8" with a +17 offset (even if attained by spacers) might be closer to what you are looking for.

thanks, yuri. i wasnt clear about the wheels. im getting 17x9.5 in the rear and 17x8.5 in the front w/ offset of 30mm.

Those will work much better. Run 10mm spacers in the rear and 5mm spacers in the front, as you need to be cautious about clearing the front coilovers (if your car is equipped.) Post pics when you have them. ;)

17x8.5 +30 front and 17x9.5 +42

talking about the rear wheels
I have 17 x 9.5" with 42mm offset, SSR competitions. Tires are BFG KD 255/40/17. JIC FLT-A2 coilovers. I rolled the fenderwell lips. I run -1.5 degrees of camber and have no rubbing. If I run around -2.5 degrees then I start getting rubbing on the inner fender wall.

haha, I tend to error on the side of more aggressive, but I guess that's because I run -5 degrees of camber in front and -3 in the rear.
