Sup! I had my car turning over after i installed the new starter and then after the third turn over it made a grinding noise (sounds like the starter gear is slipping on my flywheel gear.....about 2-3 seconds later it turns over and runs at 1200rpm) anyone know of any ideas what i could do tomorrow to fix this problem or any suggestions. Thanks

my first started did this, motor was going out. second starter did a bit too, right before the nose cone broke in too. MAke sure that you are not grounding out on the metal hose directly above the starter also. look here for info on that hose thing i just mentioned. http://www.zilvia.net/f/showthread.php?t=95170

i was reading your post....doesnt sound like the same problem...checked to see if starter on hitting that metal but its not. Could this problem im having have anything to do with the flywheel?

so i just put the starter back on today and tried some stuff....it turns over a bit better now (not all the times will it make the sounds now...maybe 1/5 it will actually work right) i was messing around with it and the noise sounds kind of like what it sounds like when you go to turn the key over once a car is already running. so i started to not hold the key as long as i used to and it was act like it was going to turn over then just die in the middle of it cranking....this is aggervating me.

sounds like the flywheel is missing a few teeth.

i have the same problem with a new starter as well, it will turn, turn, grind, turn, start up. happens maybe 2/5 of the time. starts up every time, it just makes that grinding noise every so often. i asked my mechanic about it and he said i should shim the starter. any idea what that means or have any of you guys done this? its more annoying than anything. it doesnt seem like its hurting the car in any way since it will start up 100% of the time. thanks in advance!
p.s. not trying to thread jack, just letting you know what my mechanic told me, and maybe someone can shed light on something for the both of us. oh yeah this is on a '91 5-speed.

I've never seen anyone need to shim a KA starter. On GM cars where they use one starter for thirty different engines it's possible, but we don't have those kinds of problems.
Pull the starter out and inspect the gear for wear/runout and check to see if they're all intact. If so, reach in and feel the flywheel for any abnormalities, something is damaged enough to be audible.

You might want to check the starters gear housing because mine cracked before and the piece went into the bell housing of my tranny. It made a nasty grinding sound, flywheel teeth can make those sounds too.
