View Full Version : Water temp sensor....best place to tap??

I am curious if it is better to tap the radiator hose for a temp sensor, or would it be better (more accurate) to tap into somewhere else? I am about to order a set of radiator hoses and would like to know if I should go for the blitz with the fitting already there for it, or just save some cash and get the samco hose kit. Thanks for the input.

Just tap the upper radiator hose. It will be accurate enough. I have one of these for my autometer http://www.nissport.com/catalog/type.asp?EquipmentType=Products&ProductType=Gauge+Adapters
SPLparts.com has one for metric fittings as well.

Okay, so then it would be better to buy solid radiator hoses and just cut the upper to install something like this.

Thanks for the advice

Just make sure you seal it up all purty like. Or you'll leak all over your sensor/engine.

Shouldn't leak at all if I use the adapter. I am not thinking of just cutting a hole in the hose like some people think. It's either a hose with a temp sensor fitting already on it, or a solid hose cut with the adapter in it.

Oh, well then yah, should be fine.

i put mine in the lower hose, but the upper is the better choice i found out after my gauge wouldn't even move most of the time (koyo and fan on all the time keeps it really cool except on 90 degree days)

Question: Whats wrong with OEM water temp sensor?
Its not very sensitive, and doesnt give you any numbers?

yeah, I dont wanna trust the stock sensor. Better to be safe than sorry. I have heard the same thing about it not reading temps very well.

Yeah, being that it only has 3 sensor positions...cold, normal, and hot.

i have another question. I just installed a greddy oil temp sensor in my SR. I have a Greddy oil pan so I just put it in where the extra hole is near the drail plug. I let the car idle for 10 min and it didnt move. The only things I can think of is either the car doesnt warm up enugh without a load on the motor, or it needs to ground out on the oil pan. I used thred tape, so maybe thats not allowing for a good gound. Anyone have any ideas?

Question: Whats wrong with OEM water temp sensor?
it sucks...
why not replace the old sensor with the new one... who cares if the oem gauge doesnt work... or does it need that sensor/sender to start the car?
edit: i'm asking, not telling... if possible, i'd use that location and just not have the oem guage work (i have defi's)

Oh.. do the new sensors not fit the original location? And is the stock gauge good enough to read the scale of an aftermarket temp sensor?

Why don't you just take out the stock sensor, and put the aftermarket sensor in the same hole. The Autometer temp gauges come with a sleve that the sensor fit in and it screws right into the stock location. It's right where the thermostat sits practically. So much easier and isn't as stupid as cutting a hose.....

my autometer didn't fit into the sr's stock spot. i only tried the auxilary sensor though

An adapter can be purchased to fit any sender in place of the OE unit, but they won't work with the OE gauge to answer that question.
As mentioned, the upper hose is the best place since the ECU measures it there too at the inlet neck.

What about at the waterneck? I know there is a hole there with a bolt and copperwasher and it right there at the side of the block.

you can always just tap into the waterneck. I did it and it worked great.
