View Full Version : Q45 or J30 REAR caliper upgrade?

Ok, i so am needing new rear brakes, but i dont want to settle for using oem single piston crap with un-vented rotors. But i also dont want the headache of messing with the ebrake on a Z32 rear swap. so my question is:
Are Q45 or J30 rear brakes (calipers and rotors) an upgrade for me (s14)?
Will it bolt up ok, and still maintain a functioning e-brake without modification?
if not:
Is there any way to get vented rotors on the rear without sacrificing the ebrake?
Thanks in advance
-Kyle
(i searched, but i couldnt find the exact answers i was looking for, so please, if you know the answers to any of my questions, please just give me an answer instead of just telling me to search) thanks again...
Oh, and BTW, i am doing a full Z32 Front upgrade in the spring.

You can use the whole J30 setup and yes its an upgrade almost the same size as Z32 rotors.

Last I checked, Q45/J30 has the exact same brake setup as Z32.
Correct me if I am wrong.

Z32 has 4 pot piston up front and 2 pot piston rear
Q45/J30 has 2 pot piston up front and 1 pot piston full sliding rear
For 5 lug conversion
You can only use the Z32 NA rear hub/spidle assembly with a mod to yoru rear shock/strut
You can also use the J30 rear hub/spindle assembly to with no mod to the rear shock/strut
Q45 and Z32 TT you cannot use the rear hub/spindle assembly because they use a larger axle.

wait wait wait wait wait... you can use j30 rear spindles/hubs on our cars?? i read somewhere that the j30 rear spindles/hubs were useless on our cars. is it the same for the s13 or is it an s14 thing?
oh sorry for going off topic, but i have something to add to the original question.
yeah the j30/q45 definitly use the drum ebrake like the z32, and pretty much require the same mods.

I have them on my car it will fit both cars but it'll fit S14's with even less work.
FYI I have a complete 96 J30 rear end on my car minus the subframe........only things you need to change is using on a S13 is some of the bushing on the multi links to S13 bushings, thats all.

Ok, so what you are saying is that i will have to do the same mods as Z32 rears in order to use the J30 or Q45 rear brakes? This sucks! All i want is a simple caliper upgrade and be able to use vented rotors. Maxima brakes? Altima Brakes? lol anything in the rear bolt right up that will allow me to use vented rotors? I already have the 5lug stock, and i have a J30 VLSD if that makes any difference...

Its a simple bolt on but the J30 and Q45 have drum e-brake just like the Z32 so just get over it and modify the cables to work thats the only way ur gonna have upgraded brakes unless u dont want and e-brake...lol

well shit lol. Is it all really that hard? cause if it isnt taht bad, i will just do the z32 conversion. Thanks alot for the help BTW! I appreciate it

Thanks for the help man. So all in all, could this project be properly done in a single day? And will i run into many problems if i only do the rear z32 conversion for now? i wont be able to afford fronts for another couple monthes...
and what is the complete list of parts needed for a rear Z32 conversion on an S14 w/ 5lug already? I absolutely WILL NOT give up my rear suspension, so that is out of the question. I remember reading somewhere that you have to use new suspension pieces etc...what are they talking about?

Man if your interested in thinking of selling my Q45 front calipers and rotors and possibly rears..................what ever hub/spindles u decide to go with just make sure you have the same year e-brake cable lines for because they do vary from car to car the way they connect to the drun brake setup.
So in other words you can use whatever Q45 J30 Z32 caliper brake upgade so as long as you match the e-brake cable with the hub/spidle (the car it came from)

so in order to do the brake conversion, i have to get all new hubs and spindles? Cause i already have the factory 5lug from an S14, and a J30 VLSD...

Man one day i need to do a mojopr break down of this shit............you just need the spindles and then u can bolt ur 5 lug hubs to it....
Late model J30's like my 96 J30 has a one piece hub/spindle but of course its 5 lug allready.............probably earlier model J30's have the detachable 5 lug hubs and all Z32 have the detachable 5 lug hubs but require some mod for the rear shock/strut to fit.........J30 are direct bolts in that aspect.

Ok great! Thanks man, out of curiosity, how much performance increase did you notice? So i think i am gonna try to do the J30 Rear brakes, so i dont have to mess with the suspension. And all of that bolts right up, except the ebrake...right?
So i will need to locate:
*Pair of rear J30 Calipers from a 96
*Set of slotted rotors for 96 J30
*96 J30 spindles
*and brake pads
anything else?
if i want to go ahead and use SS lines, which ones can i use? Man, i cant thank ya enough, you have been most helpful!

If I wer eyou i'd try to find a complete J30 rear cut, I got mines complte for $300 with everything that attaches to teh subframe including VLSD axles brakes rotors all suspension multi-links the whole 9 yards. Prolly use Goodridge or anything that is DOT approved for the SS lines. I noticed a huge difference when I upgraded.

All J30s are the same in the rear, but there were HICAS models so be careful there, it won't have the provision for the toe arm. Otherwise the J30 upright is a direct replacement for all S13/S14/S15 and will allow you to sell your existing 5lug hubs, making some of the money back. The only change between J30 and Schassis as mentioned is the J30 bearing it pressed into the upright, it's bolted on for the Schassis. Either way it's replaceable so there's no need to waiver from using it.
The Q45 upright is identical to the Z32, aluminum with a fork style shock mount. It can be used (non-HICAS) just as a Z32 rear setup would be installed, with a modified rear shock mount, however the hub is designed for the larger axle (Z32TT) and must be swapped out.

Sorry to bring back an old thread but if I go with a complete j30 spindle hub combo can I then use z32 calipers with the j30 rotors and what not?

Yes you can with a minor modification to the heatshield, you have to modify the part of teh heat shield where the calipers mounts to teh spindle/upright becasue teh z32 calipers is alot taller but the rotor itself will fit inside the heatshield just barely without touching.
Z32 rear rotor is 5mm larger in diameter and 9mm thicker than the J30 but it will fit in the J30 heatshield.
By the way I have a set of J30 uprights and brakes if interested.

Apparently you can't read for shit. All rear brake upgrades using internal drum ebrakes will require modification. The R33 cables are a direct bolt on for S14s, but you still have to install them along with the rest of the parts, the calipers by themselves won't give you a functioning ebrake.

This is where you have to trim on J30 uprights to fit Z32 calipers (black lines).

You don't need to modify any ebrake on any car, period. It's the cable that would need modification. Nothing else.
You can download a dictionary easily online, try it out.
