I just read the FAQ for different types of LSD's and I'm still confused. What is it specifically? and how can I tell a car has a VLSD?

Well, You can do a burn out and if there are two black tire marks you have an LSD. If only one you have an open diff.

If you want the best LSD ( like a drift spec gtr diff) go with these guys. If bought two from them, fast shipping very cheap prices and all. Just email them and tell them you are interested in buying good lsd.

Use VIN/MODEL ID # decoding to find out if you have vlsd. I have open diff and can get 2 tire marks, so thats not an effective route.

You could just jack up the rear of the car, drop the ebrake, and hand rotate the rear wheels, if they spin in the same direction, VLSD, if they spin opposite, OPEN. Why would VLSD be a bad thing? Only thing I remember that was good about it, was better gas mileage because of the gearing.

Wow. A post that wasn't a flame. :bigok:

VLSD is way better then an open differential.
I've gotten stuck on curbs and driveways b/c of my open diff (one wheel gets hung in the air and just spins).

With an open diff, power gets transfered to the wheel with less resistence.

i recently upgraded to a VLSD from an open diff, and its well worth it, especially if your car will ever see snow. I got stuck sooo many times last winter just because one wheel would be in the snow/ice and the other was on dry pavement. anyway, for performance aspect, the VLSD is sloppier than what I had expected. It seems it takes a second or so sometimes for the other wheel to spin, but not always. It's definitly not as consistent as a clutch type would be, however, I only paid like $300 total installed for mine. and even with it not being the greatest diff in the world, it still OWNS the open diff. if you can find a relatively cheap vlsd to swap in, I would go ahead and do it. and in the mean time, start saving up for a clutch type :)

and these guys kinda helped to ruin it for everyone, but real heads will always love them anyway.

I love newbies.

My weld diff has saved me twice in those situations.
