Well as the title reads, I went to the Nissan Dealership close to my house to try and get another key made up. But the service counter could not pull the Key code with my VIN# on their computer. Does anyone know if a previous owner might have denied acess to it or something? Are all dealers on the same computer network? If not I can try going to another dealer.

My only copy for the car is in very bad conditon. The grooves are all grinded off practicly, so I cant even make a copy. I don't want to pay a $hit load of money to a locksmith, the dealer I went to only charges $6 bux for a copy. Not bad since a locksmith can charge upwards of $100.

Thanks in advance.

locksmiths wont charge 100$ to make a copy, even from a worn out of even broken key.

if you can still drive your car go to a good locksmith (not the kid at Home Depot), he will make a gross copy of the key that you will try right away in your car, maybe 2-3 times or until he grinds the copy down enough for it to work. Then make sure it works in every lock. Then make him do some more copy of that new key.

Well besides going to a locksmith, are there any alternatives to try and get the Nissan original?

You don't even need the key. I just took out my driver side door lock to the local locksmith and they made up two key for me for like $30.

Yeah sometimes the keycode will not show up for some older cars. Look in the glove box, my keycode was there on my older s13.

My key's grooves are for all practical purposes, rounded off. Took it to Walmart, paid like $1.50 for my key, and they cut a copy key right in front of me. Works perfectly on my car.

IIRC, key code records for Nissans before '96 are unavailable.

Only dealer can give you original cut, they look it up from your VIN.

If your key is too worn down, all they can do at any key pkace is 'mimic' the worn key and try to make it like what it would have been like new.

Cars older than I think 10 years aren't in the database anymore.

you can get them made with the key code only, no VIN needed. will be in the glovebox or on the passenger side lock cylinder.

Oh, that must be it. I have a 95.

I already tried that, and it wasn't some teenager that did it. I took it to a small mom & pop hardware store and the owner tried to do it, but it wouldn't come out good. Thats why I want an original cut.

will be in the glovebox or on the passenger side lock cylinder.

Its not in the glovebox, where on the lock cylinder do I look. The door jam? Or do I have to take the door panel off and look somewhere else?

Thanks.

i'm having the exact same problem as the original poster with my S14. dealership told me 96 and up are the only codes avaliable. i saw someone said the code is possibly on the lock cylinder? is it cast or something?

Yah VIN only. Brought the title with me. I forgot that I can check the code in my glove box, mine might be missing anyways.

is the door keys, same as the glove box key? of so then you can just take in the glove box and get a key made from that easier, and might be cheaper, right?

Ummm, Nissan only used one key. Same for Ignition, door, glovebox...

I dont think the glovebox has unique grooves. I'm pretty sure I can use my key on another S14 glovebox. I think its just a mickey-mouse lock. I'll have to try it on another 240 to confirm that.

S13 glovebox locks are not "Mickey Mouse."

I have several gloveboxes laying around, and only the key from the car it came from originally will open the glovebox.

Again, this is for S13.

Mmm time to jot down the VIN's of 240's... I keed. When I needed a replacment key the dealer told me to bring in the passnager side door lock.

haha, I went to the dealership and the guy at the parts desk was so psyched that he made me a working copy of the key on the first try, he just gave it to me for free. That was awesome.
