View Full Version : What cat-back in your opinion is not annoying on a NA?

I'm doing my SOHC to DOHC swap and I got a OBX header. That thing is sweet btw. I'm almost done putting the engine in and I'm going to need a cat-back soon. I can run just the head (the header is one piece to the cat so its pretty long) for a little bit. But not for a long time. I will be putting a test pipe in so I'll have the OBX headers and test pipe then whatever cat-back. I am NA for now. I will want a 3" cat-back becuase I'll will be either turbing the KA or get a SR later down the road. I dont want to have a super loud exhaust. I really like the price of the Megan or the SScrome but I read their really loud on a NA KA. So what exhuast should I get to be some what queit? I mean I dont mind if it is some what loud but not annoying. Or something that when I get over 4000 rpm that the person next to me thinks I'm trying to race them. So what should I get in your opinion? Thanks for everyones input.

search? :p

people been saying RS*R ExMag...

Or any of the 3 inch catback with a QUALITY silenser. forgot about the SSautocrome silenser - mine rattles in low rpm, so I just took off that junk unless I go long distance travel.

With header, 3 inch catback will be LOUD no matter what. perhaps better sound deadening in your car??

You should. . .SEARCH. There are 3 different exhaust threads that have been created in the past 3 months, you need to look. Most people will tell you get RS*R Ex-Mag. But look around. Plus to get better answers you need to specify how much you want to spend, the exhaust piping size. Etc.

Arn't there like a few hundred threads exactly like this already? Just go custom. There is no need for some jdm bling exhaust. The rs*r, it's a bit loud on a na ka IMO. And if you plan on running a test pipe also, then forget it. You can't have your cake and eat it too.

any exhaust will be loud on your car beacuse you're n/a .

hell even the rsr ex mag sounds loud and aggresive.

If you want quiet... then you arent going to get it... unless you run an apexi hks blah blah with the stupid silencer in it.

oh yeah and search

you are in KS --> it's not like california where cops are dicks... So, if you want performance, get a 3 inch catback and weld on a resonator and add a stupid silencer... done deal. If not, just keep the car under 2500 rpm (that's what I do for everyday driving).

well, my apex'i n1 dual was extreemly loud with my hotshot header, until i bought silencers... which i have f/s... but with them in, didn't even get harassed anymore buy Virginia cops, which is in my book a very good accomplishment. sounded really good too, just sounded deeper, and ever at full throttle didn't sound very loud at all. i loved the way it sounded with the silencers. now, i have the sr swap, and the exhaust note isn't loud anymore without the silencers. i'd say go for the n1 dual, or the n1 with a silencer... just my $0.02

This will end this burning question Get a unviersal muffler either HKS,Bltz,Apexi,Tanabe, get it installed at a Muffler shop in either 2.4in or 2.5in pipeing with a perferated core resonator just like the magnaflow resonators, with a straight pipe and Bada bing bada Boom you got a bad ass exhaust system that aint going to bee that loud and will give U the power yoou need at 3000+rpms thats how it is on my KA at least. F**K all those Exhaust systems there a waste of money all you;re paying for is just the damn name. You save if you make a custom system the only difference is going to be the muffler its self cuz there kinda pricey but its all worth it. If you try the HKS Hi power it sounds like a Hypered up GRowel thats not like an angrey bee like some hondas I heard around.

does SSAutochrome exhausts include in the "brand name" scene? :p

Seriously though - you want performance, you pay the $ and your ears suffer at the same time (at least in KA N/A)

keep it stock.....until you go turbo

SimpleS14

Because you have a header....I suggest stock exhaust, or any exhaust that comes with a silencer (i.e. RS*R GT2).

haha, thats funny. just seems to me your a cheap ass and want the brand name exhaust with paying for it. mandrel bent exhaust will always flow better than crush bent. always has, always will. if you're wanting most power gains, dont be cheap and think your getting the same performance with a ghetto-fabbed muffler shop exhaust. pay a little extra, because in the long run you'll end up wanting the cat-back, because your muffler shop special exhaust is rusted through and leaking.

and btw, i think thats one of the longest run-on sentences i've seen on here. keep up the good typing skills.

If I keep it stock I'll have to buy the whole stock cat-back. Reason why is I bought the shell car then put the engine in. The exhuast on the car was totally shot. Otherwise I would just hook that back up. So I was like well if I'd have to buy the cat-back I might as well get a performance system.

I keep on thinking of doing a custom. But from what I hear thats the best way to get the loudest exhuast.

My dad has a good friend that owns a muffler shop. So just buy a nice HKS or whatever brand muffler, get a Magnaflow resonator then have them put it all on? Then should have everything I'll need other than the muffler I want right. Then should have the resonator right?

Nismo240SX

you can do it that way yes... but you'll end up paying about $200 or a good muffler, and about another $100 for the resonater... and then whatever it costs for the pipping and installation. if you dont do it that way, i'd have the exhaust shop pull it loose after its made, and buy hi-temp paint(flat black/or steel gunmetal) so it wont rust. thats another plus of buying a cat-back.

Now the problem is if I get a aftermarket cat-back like Apexi or HKS then its going to be louder then I'll want wont it?

I dont want to pay $600 for a cat-back...but I'll pay for something good and what I want.

Get a custom exhaust its you're best option.

If you go custom, make sure to get a decent sized resonator. Best sounding nissan exhaust I've heard custom was a magnaflow high flow muff (not sure which one, just looks like a reg. muff not like a ricecan or anything) with a big ass magnaflow resonator on a ga16de:ugh: .

I've got custom on my N/A and its loud as fuck

I say the HKS hi power is the best sounding thats what im runing on my 240 with a magaflow resonator. I have the turbo size muff which looks big as hell and yet with that magnaflow resonator it slightly cut some sound but you have a aggressive deep Vroom sound which isnt anoying but once you hit 3000rpm it sounds crazy. Till this day no cop has stoped me or dog'ed me or nothing not to metion I live in LA where the cops are dicks if they hear a loud Exhaust.

HKS Hiper (has a resonator)
5zigen Border III (also resonated)

Both are quiet on NA and 70-75mm.

I know cause my friend ran my old Border III on his car (DOHC KA) and it was quiet, and my other friend had a Hiper on his (DOHC KA) 'til he started boostin. So I know from actual experience. :P

this thread is so beat down to death right now.. I think the original poster got his question answered. In summary:

couple exhausts (name brand) out there which would make KA N/A run decently quiet - resonator is required to keep the exhaust quiet, other than that - go with custom + silencer or make it as loud as possible. Done deal.

Well I ended up going with the Megan 3" for now. Its going to be loud but last night I got my car on the road with the DOHC swap done (first time I've ever driven it). I only have just the header right now. So it was pretty loud. That dumps the exhuast off right under me. It was loud but it wasn't to bad really. So I figured if it was that loud with just the header it would quiet down some with the test pipe and cat-back on exiting at the rear of the car as to right under me. So I just when with Megan 3" and Megan 3" test pipe. That will set me up really nice for when I go turbo.

an all right selection... i think you'll been happier with a cat-back, than a custom set-up. all the custom set-ups i've seen with a brand name muffler and resonator, seem to sound either raspy, or have a funny tone to them.

the way i see it is buy a cat-back from a brand name beause they have put lots of reasearch time and money to produce their system!! so its worth everypenny!
