Hey, I was wondering what octane gas people use??? Because gas prices in Cali are finally dropping, and all this time I used regular, but is it worth it to go to the next level now? I got an automatic s13, no swaps or anything. Just wondering. Thx :wiggle:

there's no need to run anything higher than regular really.

Just stick with the cheap one, you dont need high octane.

I noticed a slight gas mileage increase, and a definate fun increase with the plus gas, but premium my mileage went down. probibly cause i put my foot into it more when it is alot spryer

Its been proven my friend gets 50 more miles with the highest gas then the lower one or regular.

there is definitely not much of a difference unless you have a race car thats fully built. its just a waste of money. if you are stock or have one or two mods stick with the cheapest gas because buying higher octane is just a waste. i highly doubt that youre friend gets more 50 miles on a tank. it all depends on how you drive...

i really doubt it. possibly a change in driving styles

93 octane really helps my lower boost map. If i dont have 93 octane im pretty much fucked.

That's funny cuz I used to always fill up with 93, then prices kept rising so I switched to 87 to try it out.. I get atleast an extra 3mpg with 87 vs 93. No difference in driving style. Prices are $2.09 (87) so $2.19 (93) now here in Maine so I've been thinking of switching back but I really see no point.

turbo and built n/a = 93
stock and bolt on mods = 87

Isnt the recomended fuel for an SR 95 octane? Not like we can do any better than 93 . . . :rawr:

he's got a KA guys... he doesn't need to run 93.

FSM says run premium gas only, so i use premium gas only
Precautions for Fuel
Use unleaded premium gasoline with an octane rating of at least 91 AKI (Anti-Knock Index) number (research octane number 96).
If unleaded premium gasoline is not available, unleaded regular gasoline with an octane rating of at least 87 AKI (research octane number 91) can be used.
However, for maximum vehicle performance, the use of unleaded premium gasoline is recommended.
it's not like it's that much extra money. maybe $200 more on gas per year.

^^^ And that is why I use 93 octane, it was only 2.36/gal last time I filled up.

plus is better for your motor... its cleaner... for for the 91, 93 or if your lucky 95! its worth the couple cents extra!

you do know it barely matters right...its not worth the difference. particularly in the thread starters position...

My friend has a 2000 altima with headers and cold air intake. And obviously it makes a difference what engine you have. If you guys dont believe me w/e cause I could care less. I know what I know.

Do you guys realize the reason you run higher octane is to keep from getting detonation. It has nothing to do with your mods. You could run stock motor, advance your timing and need higher octane. Or you could have a built motor with a T88 and run 87 if you tune it accordingly and back off the timing.

Isnt the recomended fuel for an SR 95 octane?
the fuel in japan is rated differently at the pumps than it is here in the US. in japan they advertise the RON (research octane number) on the pump, where here in the US they use the (R+M)/2 method which is the RON octane and the MON (Motor Octane Number) octane averaged together. for a given fuel, the RON could be 95 octane, and the MON is generally almost 10 points below that so around 85. add the two and average and you've got US ~90 octane for the same fuel. :)

The High Octane here off base is at least 94 Octane. We use the American standard for Octane Level tetsing at base Gas stations and have 93 on base available...there is a grade higher than this available off base..I have heard it is 95

Maybe this can help shed some light on the subject. This testing was done on a '91 s13 Hatch with a stock Ka24de. This was done for my brothers science fair project. We Used Chevron Regular, Plus, Premium, as well as two Sunoco race fuels. Gained about 3mpg switching from Regular to Premium, and got about 6-7mpg when going from Regular to Sunoco.

ok, that shows that Sunoco is better than Chevron but says nothing about low grade Sunoco gas.

Excuse you? Didnt quite understand that.... It is more to show that mileage does increase with octane... BTW the reason that the Chevron figures are lower than at the pump is because they are MON octane numbers.

My gas cap door (and all of yours...DE motors at least) should say Premium Recommended, and I always assumed Nissan knows it's own motors, then again, maybe ExxonMobil payed them off to do that. Either way, I have always used premium in my 240.

not true
my 05 civic specifically says use 87
rx7 n/a also calls for 87

doubtful
the only reason any of us run premium on a ka24de is because nissan says use premium only on the ka24de.

its not the same brand of gas nor from the same station. it would have been a better comparisson if all the same brand of gas was used.

Well I haven't driven every car in the world, but I've filled up quite a few hundred (probably thousand) of them, and every one of them did not say premium recommended. Usually only cars that recommend premium, *should* have premium in them, rarely do I see that on econoboxes or lower end cars. I was surprised Nissan recommends premium on the 240 actually.

Not likely, premiuim is actually harder to ignite than regular, in order to reduce detonation.

I see what you're saying, but hey it was my brothers project, I only did the driving for it. I don't know if Chevron/Texaco makes race fuel but if they do, it was not readily availible. We used Sunoco because that's what they sell at Infineon, and was the most accesible. Also I forgot to add that the windows were down the whole test (down the first one, and we had to keep it constant) so you can factor the 5-7% mileage loss due to the drag... :blah:
Edit: BTW, all Chevron gas was bought at the same time at the same station and the Sunoco was also bought at the same time and same station as its counterpart.

Chevron 91 only. What can I say, all I drive aside from my 240 is luxory cars so I figure might as well toss it in there. But then again with modified timing I have to. Both ways in the end 87-91 fill is only like a $1.00~ diff per tank...

+1 for chevron, i tried shell crap one time...never again
yeah and to try to save 1 or 2$ while filling up for 25 or 30$ is kinda meaningless, especially if its better for the car.

it's not like it's that much extra money. maybe $200 more on gas per year.
Here is the problem with premium........
Back in the early 1990's california's premium fuel was 91 octane. 92octane was supreme.
Cali no longer offers 92 octane in supreme accept in a few counties. So now people in cali need to use supreme in order to prevent knock and ping.
It is and always will be 91octane IMO.
I get my gas at costco, it's super cheap and just as clean as chevron. Cali fuel either uses MTBE which will be completly banned I believe in a few years or 5% ethanol. That is mandated by california health department, so really it doesn't matter if you get gas at chevron, costco, shell, or even Safeway...
How weird is that!!!! Safeway selling fuel saw it for the first time 2 months ago...........
Can't decide between babying my car and budgeting my car.
So I fill with 89 :keke:
ranisron
11-14-2005, 07:36 AM
89 over here... I fill mine at either Marathon or BP/Amoco. No Shell in my car.
I usually run 3 tanks of 89 and then 1 tank of BP 93 octane to clean up the fuel systems.
Forget about gas mileage in the city - I don't count it anymore, I will get shit city mileage anyway.

i have a built rb20det and as my friend says "your better off burning your money" everytime i head to the gas station. On my rb ECU it has different fuel maps for different octanes, which remaps timing on the motor. I thought most cars had that, but maybe nissan cars more about my motor then yours IDK...

11-14-2005, 10:51 AM
I did noticed that my car doesn't need 91. But performance is something we always want. I have been putting 89 and didn't realize that Nissan recommends Premium 91. If you want the engine to be in tune with the advanced timing and very little or no detonation, then the preimuim octane should be used regardless of what mpg you're trying to achieve. I don't pay attention to mpg anyways. Only how much gas I have left in the tank. :2f2f: :D

11-14-2005, 10:58 AM
i would think there's a reason for having 2 timing maps on the stock ecu.
93 for me.

I might be swapping in a blacktop SR so looks like I'm going from 87 to 91!
