well just wondering which of the two is better in reliability and i guess performance.

The blacktop is better in both. Its a newer motor than the red top.

Well they are identical beside manufacturer date. Redtop=91-94 Blacktop=95-99(?)
Please look in the FAQ for questions such as this since they have been covered like 30 billion times. Even google can help!
