what do the gray squares mean?...i got two gray squares, but they seemed like pretty positive posts...does that mean that the person didnt want to affect the level, but still felt like commenting?

grey squares means that the person doesn't have enough positive reputation to change your reputation.
In other words,
User X has 5 points and tries to give me a negative rep, while user Y has 15 points and tries to give me negative.
Only Y's rep will go thru to affect mine (I believe the minimum to affect rep is 11 points, everyone starts with 10).
X leaves a grey square, Y leaves a red one.

Using your same example, what if X and Y wanted to leave positive rep rather than negative. What color square would X leave? I assume Y would leave a green square?

It works both ways. Only grey until they have enough to actually effect other people.
