Discuss...here's the checklist of questions:

1. Do you run stretched tires? If so, what size tire and what size wheel?

2. Do you go fast on said tires? If so, how fast?

3. Do you ever experience tire failure at speed? Elaborate if yes.

Long story short...I had a sidewall split from the tread on me at an highway+ speeds.

1. 215/45/17 on 17x9

2. Yes, above 55...by a little bit :Ownedd:

3. Yes, Sidewall split from the tread on the inner side and then the tire jumped off of the rim.

Not stretched tires for me. I think it's a pretty bad idea to drive on them daily. A tire is designed to support the weight of the car vertically on it's sidewalls. Not at an angle. And speed ratings dont' apply when the tire is installed in a manner other than designed.

Technically, the weight of the car is supported by the air in the tire.

O wow, I never thought about this aspect when it came to tires and stretching them . . .

How did you fare in the situation? Hope everything is atleast "ok"
What tire manufacturer was this? You might want to contact them about this if the tread was still rather high, make sure there arent any other occurences going on. Hell, maybe get a fresh set out of them. Smaller sidewall tires do take impacts less well and combined with the stretching could have done it alone. Do you remember hitting any rather large bumps recently?

18x9.5 with 225/40 lots of highway driving all year 75mph+ on a daily, no problems
17x9 with 215/45 not many miles but hit 100+ several times,no sweat.

No problems here either

Currently:
225/45 on 17x9.5
225/40 on 18x9.5
225/40 on 18x10

Do lots of track, street and stupid highway driving, no issues yet.

Had a friend with 195/50/15s on 15x8.5s, he never had problems

Drove the origin corolla for a week or so daily on 195/50 on 15x9s no problems...

This wasn't in my 240sx.. it was in my G20, but -

1. 195/65/14 - stock rims (yea 14" haha)

2. Going 80-85 MPH on the highway

3. Back Right tire unexpectedly blew, the back of the car jumped when the tire blew and the car started to shake voilently. I pulled over to find the tire destroyed, tread seperated from the sidewall, sidewall still hugging the rim.

on my 240, I have lightly stretched tires, I drive like an ass and autoX... no problems.

1. 225/50/16 - 16x8
2. No Problems
3. No Problems

my bad, misread, I thought this was about blowouts... I guess it was about problems with stretching... in that case I guess the second part of my post applies...

if anything its the exact opposite of stretched...

reminds me of a floatie (a little kid would use at a pool) to protect the rim surface from getting marred :)

The tires are ST115

I'm getting a replacement shipped tomorrow

Speed is higher then anyone else listed so far...pretty much as fast as my car will let me go w/ the 5th gear rev limiter in place

Didnt crash, got pretty lucky, car is 100% okie dokey

People at work tried to tell me that the stretch is what killed the tire (tire had all of 60 miles on it, NO impacts what so ever) but i didnt believe them...Told them, "guys on Zilvia stretch their tires like crazy and no one ever said anything about blowouts".

So yeah, anyone ever gone 140 on a stretched tire?

The Azenis sidewalls are stronger than a mo fo. That's some crazy shit.

it has nothing to do with sidewall stiffness. It's the seam between the steel belts and the sidewall.

So what's the verdict from everyone?

no fast on stretched tires or defective tire?

Dousan_PG

absoultely defective tire!!

Just dont tell them what you put it on, you probably wont be able to use the argument "but everyone else can do it".

I see blown out tires all the time, mostly 65+ series tires. It could be defective, the age of the tire, its overall condition. Even large tractor tires can zipper or blow out the seam when being filled with air...

i see a lot of blow-out at work. surprisingly most of them are newer tires. so that would mean defective tire.

Ian

sorry, tire pressure was 36-38 and the tire was 2 weeks old NOT DAILY DRIVEN!

lilredstiffy
11-09-2005, 08:54 AM
defective tire

imo stretching a tire makes it less likely to lose the bead/have problems

the thing to worry about is the wheel...its lots more exposed..but who cares

Just a mild stretch here... 18x8.5/9.5 225/245/40 ST-115s. Never had a problem, had em up to 110mph the other day on the highway. Been daily driven now for 2-3k miles. I think you just got a defective tire. Local friend of mine has same tires I do but on 18x9/10 and has beaten the shit outta them on the mountain and haven't had any trouble.

read this months Modified Mag and they list some pros of stretching a tire on a large wheel....... IIRC its in the article about wide fenders!

how come theres people that still dont know why everybody and their mom stretches...granted, only a handfull really use it to their advantage or at all...im not ranting about anyone, but i just wonder...you'd think after being on this board and being exposed to drift this, drift that they'd pick it up no?

back on topic, yes, id have to agree that you recieved a dud...

well I guess its cause I come here mostly to sell shit and help people with tech problems...my tires arent stretched I have 17x 8j's and run 225 on the front and 235 on the rear....I dont know many people that stretch their tires here...guess we just have more horsepower and dont need shortcuts to slide...

It's not a shortcut, it's called feel.

Stretched tires = smoother transitions from gripping to sliding, and better response up front.

Whatever though, it's all preference anyways.

totally understandable...not to bust your balls or anything, but "[not] many people that stretch their tires here..." for some reason that doesnt make much sense to me seeing as how you reside in japan...quite common with the drifter/touge crowd...

and yes, its more preference than anything else, although it is "easier" to drift with stretched tires...but everybodys' definition of "easier", "drifting", and "stretching" are different...so whatever floats your boat...

17x9 with 215/45ZR17 ST115
17x10 with 235/40ZR17 ST115

No problems whatsoever, including my recent trip to SEMA on the fucked up 15 freeway between LA and Vegas. If you've been on it recently you know what I mean, and that was on my 10/8 Tanabe DD suspension.

And I've been running stretched tires since my 15x10 KMCs with 205/50R15 Fulda tires back in '91.

Ian

Speaking of Fulda...where do you buy them? A friend of mine did an event on some Fulda Extremos and I swear...he could do 3 more before they're done lol...unless he just sucks that bad (possible)
