i'm about to order a set of clutch disks from japanparts.com. the guy is being very coy about what i can expect to pay for customs duty. i'm just curious if anyone else who has ordered from japanparts or takakaira or such sites has paid duties, and if so, on what type of part and how much was paid.
thanks guys!

Those sites are based in Japan and have the parts usually more readily available than shops in the US. They get charged customs to send you the parts, so they will make you pay them if you want the goods. Selection and prices are usually better than US based shops.
If you order the parts from a US distributor they usually calculate the cost of duties and shipping into the final cost of the goods which may or may not be marked off of retail depending upon the volume that the US distributor is bringing in.
Like you rarely pay duties on HKS, GReddy, or Tein, but the US retail price calculates all those variables into it.
Either way you'll end up paying for the duties in one way or another.

i know i'll end up paying customs duties in some way or another. i was just wondering how much of a duty i'll need to pay. i've also heard that some people who've ordered stuff from those sites didn't pay customs. i'm just trying to piece together a more complete picture of the situation.

Tell them to mark it as a GIFT if the declared value is over $200, and you wont have to pay taxes.
Anything under $200 makes it over tax-free.
