I have an aftermarket stereo in my S14 and I'm replacing the rear speakers with component speakers that can be configured as coaxial. I already have nice coaxes up front, and a sub in the trunk. An amp drives the sub and the rear speakers. Here are the otpions I am considering. What would sound best?
1.) Just mount them in coax configuration in the rear.
2.) Mount as component in the rear with tweeters mounted on rear deck cover.
3.) Mount as component in the rear with tweeters mounted on C pillars above seatbelt mount or maybe some other spot.
4.) Put coaxes in back and components up front. Mount tweeters in door. Mounting tweeters in A-pillar would be hard due to gauge pod.
5.) any other ideas?

It would be best to move the set of coxials you have in the front doors to the rear. Then mount your component set in the front doors and keep the tweeters in the doors. Try not to put them too high unless you really like the highs bright. Also, you would be much better to have the fronts amplified and not the rears. Many argue this, but the proper way is for the front to set up your staging the rear to provide fill. ;)

I agree. That's going to be the most work for me but will give the best sound. Thanks for the input.

Rears only provide Fill a lot of SQ cars are running a 2.1 config with only components up front and a sub in the rear. You always want your best shit up front.
Mount your tweets in the sail panels.

you won't regret moving the seperates to the front. mount the tweet either next to the door handle, on the side view mirror blank (if you have that trim model with the spot or can get ahold of piece that has holes) or on top of the front windshield pillar trim piece. perferibally get mounts for a clean look on the laset 2 places. for the first, remember CUT THE HOLE SMALL.

Yeah, I have a set of components up front and coax config in the rear. Sounds very nice, I'd reccomend it.
I don't know where your gage pod is, maybe this wouldnt work.
But, I bought the A-pillar trim from an s14 w/ tweeter grills in it, trimmed out the frame behind the grill to get some extra space, and put them on the pillar.
if you have ANYTHING for rear fill....make sure it's BARELY audible...and only band pass. if you run high's in the rear, it'll completely fuck up the sound stage
as for the front...mounting the tweeters in the a-pillars about 2" above the dash, point RIGHT at each other is the best place to really mount them. that'll leave the imaging correct, and it's the closest place to having equal sound paths. anywhere else, and you'll not get nearly as good of imaging...seeing as the higher the frequency...the more direct the path needs to be.
the mid/low can be mounted lower in the door with no real ill effects

Yup, I agree with everyone, sound stage should be focused from the front of the car. i.e. option 4.
