Hi.

As some of you know i was converting my UK spec S14a Auto to Manual with a S15 6 speed box (UK cars are sr20det with LSD as std)

Well its now finished and thought i would share some information with you guys about the swap as i found a lot of conflicting information on here.

Parts you need from the s15....
Gearbox
Dual Mass Flywheel (Very important a s14 one will not work)
Gearbox bolts (much longer than s14)
Starter Bolts (much longer than s14)
Gearbox metal gasket
Front prop shaft
gearbox mount

For a clutch i went for a exedy tripple puck , which works fine, a little bitey at first but it has now settled down.

Fitment was fine, the s15 box and prop directly replace the s14 box and prop so NO length problems.

The shifter is much higher in the car than a s14 shifter as the trans is taller at the back but fits fine.

Thats it realy, quite happy with it much more fun to drive than the auto.

One last thing about the speedo, the s15 box does not have the speed sensor or the ring in the box so its not an option.
One of the guys on the UK www.sxoc.com board is building me a converter that uses pulses from the diff to drive the speedo.
This is the same as how it is done on the s15 as the s15 only has a ABS sensor in the diff and the ABS computer generates the signal for the dash.

SWEET!
Would a picture laden tutorial be in the works by chance?
I'm sure there would be many who would want to give this a try :)
(cept the hardcore naysayers that think the S15 tranny will break if you look at it funny :duh: )

whats rpm are you at going 70mph in 6th? ive always wondered if they just like stuck an extra gear on the top, or if all the gears before it have been shortened.

Yoshi, Sorry no tutorial but its the same as doing any other transmission swap in the s14 (I was also not the person that did the conversion (its my car) but i spent weeks researching the conversion before it went in)

chmercer, My speedo is not finished yet so am using GPS , 80MPH is about 3K RPM. (I still have an auto LSD)
My fuel efficency has gone from 310/315 to about 350mph per tank (Very important in the Uk based on fuel being $1.76 per litre)

S14DB , not even going to try and explain the flywheel, the basics are it stops harmonic vibratios through the box , it has weights that move from the inside to the outside of the wheel , in effect changing the rotatating mass of the wheel based on engine speed , its a genious idea (it can't be implemented on a s14 without the s15 box due to the increased size of the flywheel, its fugging heavy)

OptionZero, Nope.
If the box from the Sr is interchangable with the Ka then it should be possible, but i have not looked into it.

Dont you only need the s15 pumpkin to mate the speedometers since that is where the s15 speed sensor is located?

No read my first post, the s15 diff ONLY has a ABS sensor (This is FACT)

This is one of the reasons for making this post to insure that people know the facts about the conversion as there are way too many rumors on this site about the conversion (a small amount of facts as well)

"One last thing about the speedo, the s15 box does not have the speed sensor or the ring in the box so its not an option."

Thats the part that confused me because you diddnt mention the diff there

"One of the guys on the UK www.sxoc.com board is building me a converter that uses pulses from the diff to drive the speedo.

and thats the part I dont even remember reading until the second time through...Damn reading comprehension

I dont see why this wouldn't be adaptable for the KA, kinda pointless, but a cool option

Technically, you copied his, since his was stock. :eek3d:

Actually, I'm pretty sure you're the one who copied him. His car probably came like that.

with the aero , the std car looks like a top of the range 240sx (so side skirts ,tiny spoiler and bumper with a lip).

Apart from the front bumper the rest has been on the car 3 years, genuine Z Valance, Genuine kouki wing (skirts are std ),genuine kouki grill (the only non nissan bits are the blitz nur intake and exhaust)
wheels are 350z , brakes are skyline r32 gtr (much better than the stock 4pot 280mm calipers) self folding mirrors

actually, meph, he added the z-valence on afterwards, and I think I had mine first. He also did not have the JDM bumper in england, that was also his own doing.

he has the eurobumper + USDM kouki bumper...added Z-valence + JDM kouki bumper + S14 k's wing

i added everything he added + euro bumper...=P

he's in england, the z-valence only came in Germany as far as i know...and the z-edition only came in green red and black.

Cookie, does the 6-Speed bellhousing mate to the gearbox, the same way the SR20 5-speed does? Also, does anyone know about SR flywheel fitment to a KA?

that's great if you want a streetable car that has no vibrations, but a flywheel that increases rotational mass sounds quite parasitic and power-draining to me

OptionZero. Take it easy dude FFS, for ref the i have had the valance ages and it is a one off not part of the original production run. I got nissan to dig out the moulds from the originals and make it specificaly for me. (Yes Really)

90RS13 , The 6 speed box is in 3 sections , the 5 speed is 2, i am not sure if the bell can be swapped , i suspect not.

EchoOfSilence, think of it as a lightend fly when you want it and a std weight fly when you want that

cookie said he's only had the valence for a year at the most...

but anyways, i'll drop it, i didn't meant for it to be a big deal anyways, people are takin' it too seriously.

either way you kno the GDM style roxxors all boxxers!

god, the only person taking it seriously is YOU. no one on this forum originated the jdm aero, NO ONE. you are all jocking the nutsack of japan so get over it.

Very nice work there Cookie, keep us updated mate.

alrite alrite, I didn't mean it to be a thing, sorry everyone for diluting the thread. The nutsack of Japan is too tasty, which is why I have wheels and aero from there...like most people =P

Mines probably... (Being optomistic)
5,000 British pounds = 8,842.5 U.S. dollars

or half that for a standard one in OKish condition.

Just a little update on this.

Box has now done 20k miles on the car so 30k in total
Its a little whinney, which i think is the input bearing.

Its holding up well for now and hopefully it will last for a good while longer before a Rb30dett and box get swapped in.

did you ever get your speedo working?

cookie
10-18-2006, 09:54 AM
Yes about 4 weeks after the first post, its a custom circuit which take a fead from the rear diff abs and outputs the signal to the speedo, it works fine and is more correct than the std sender as this one knows my tyre size.
