Hey guys,
The time has almost come for me to be purchasing a new turbo and I still can't decide what i want. I have been looking into the possibility of the twin scroll 16g off the EVO VIII's...but if i dont get that I would want a GT series BB turbo...I was thinking I could ask your help with what kind of numbers and spool time you have for your turbo...Please list size, any important mods that would increase/decrease spool up time, what RPM you get full boost at, what kind of power your making, and what your general impression is of the turbo. Oh yeah this is on an SR20(S13 if i need to be specific). Thanks guys!! I hope this can be helpful to others in the same boat as me...

Turbos i have specifically thought about:
S15 T28
TS 16G
GT2871R
GT28RS
GT3071R
GT3076R
GT35/40R
GT3040R

a 16g is incredibly small. It looks like the kinda turbo that would run out of its effeciency range after 17-18+ psi. I would go for something bigger.

GT28RS this what YOU said.
GT3071R

A GT28RS sounds nice. But what are you mainly getting this for? like drift? drag? or autoX/road race? or just an upgrade... Just wondering.

well i havent really thought about what to use the car for...i like going fast but i just bought a 91 Eclipse GS-T(i used to have a 400hp awd talon) for $100 so the thought to build that has come up and id like to just have fun with the 240...but i guess i want something that is faster spooling, around 4k, that can still be fun but also make some power when i need to go in a straight line...a 16g, specifically the EVOIII 16g outflows and outspools the GT28RS...a guy on FA just put one on his CA18 untuned and made 258whp at 14psi...it is one of the flatest turbo curves ive ever seen... http://nissaninfiniticlub.net/photopost/data/546/19470jonbasedyno.jpg there thats the graph...16gs can run 20+psi...i was looking at the EVO VIII twin scroll which i believe hit 11.23(might be faster now) on an AWD EVO8...and we all know thats a heavier car...supposedly they have seen like 450awhp out of the twin scroll turbo...

edit: they have now hit 10.90 with the stock evo turbo and no nitrous...

That ca18 wasnt even revving to the max, it had multiple electronic issues.
The gt28rs is quite over rated from what Ive seen. The gt28r spools earler, and can produce "almost" as much power but with a much better torque curve. I honestly feel like either gt28r and settle with around 280whp which is well within the efficency of the gt28r as in it can be pushed to 300whp; or take a step past the gt28rs and go to the gt2871r .64 which can support up to 340whp efficently but have spool about 100-200 rpms later than the gt28rs which maxes at 320whp. Around 4k is still kinda general but I'm kind of thinking the gt2871r is sounding good for you, depending on how much power you want is the decision between the a/r and manifold. 400whp can be had with full boost at 4100

it seems like my friends GT3076R on his EVO(i know its a different car) but he saw full boost(20psi) at like right around 4k...it out spooled my friends DSM with a 50trim in a 4th gear pull on the interstate...but i wouldnt see why an SR20 couldnt get boost around 4k with a GT3076R?

but really what i was looking for in this thread was some hard numbers and stuff from people who have had it...

It will always depend on what you want and how much you want to pay.

Want a streetable, super fast spool, and almost 300whp, get the GT28R, that's the one I have on my FWD SR20DET, faster spool than a T25 for $800, and it's plug and play.
If you want + 300whp, still fast spool and streetable, with little mods and a $1K+ budget then my best guess will be the GT28RS, and so on......

well thats why i was asking as a general question for people with upgraded turbos...i wanted the cold hard numbers from them and then i was gonna decide what exactly i wanted...cause i just dont know anymore...at first i wanted the big impressive snail but now i just want the car to be fun and stupid hard to drive... i spose i could get a bigger turbo and a smaller turbo and just swap for what i wanna do...i really wanted a GT3071R or 76R but people were trying to talk me into a GT35R...im used to a little bit of lag as i had a 50trim DSM before this that i got full boost(19psi) at like 3200-4000 depending...i like hard hitters thats for sure...

Allright man, I just gave you the information that I have read on here and on Freshalloy from peoples set ups. Go search if what I did wasnt good enough.
A gt2871r .86 on a full race manifold with cams, and intake manifold can yield 400whp at 20psi which can be done on pump gas. Have you rode in a rwd 2600 pound 400whp car before? Its quite a bit to handle

oh no i appreciated your help i wasnt bashing it at all...thats not what im about...i will welcome any and all help on this thread...i dont want this to turn into a "your wrong, im right" thread...i just havent been around SR's very long and dont know how they spool turbos...and i dont know much about the GT series from garrett as thats not a very common upgrade on DSMs...i guess maybe i am asking for the dream turbo like everyone else: quick spool, and can make 500+whp lol...

Yes you are. Welcome to the real world.

the 500whp turbo would be a gt30r if you wanted to go gt series. The gt series does the standard thing where if you want big power you're getting the lag. The power just comes on smoother because of all those diddly do dad bearings and the lower weight wheels/new design and transient response is greatly increased. Looks like you are going to need PeakBoost/FullRace manifold though and some cams with atleast 11mm lift and 264 duration if you are shooting for 500whp. Go find some 400whp 240sx's in your area and get a ride =)

lol if i could find some i would...im the only swapped 240 and 1 of only 3 S14s in my metro area of roughly 200k....the closest SR20 RWD is in an S13(about an hour) and its pretty much stock...and another guy is in the process of an RB25 swap in an S13 about an hour away...

edit: its kinda weird having a car thats capable of more than just going in a straightline like my AWD dsm...i know it could handle decently but it was meant for big power in a straightline and now this car can do it all :)
