I have a 95 s14. It seems that when I maintain speeds of 70mph for a period of time (driving on the freeway) smoke starts to rise from my center console. It seems to be coming from inside the shift boot. It doesn't smell something is burning. What the hell could this be?

"I finally talked to a friend who had a similar problem, and I found out what it was. The seals on the transmission were leaky, causing the fluid to drip onto the exhaust, which would cause the smoke. If you start seeing smoke or your shift knob begins feeling tight when shifting, you might want to have your fluid checked. Gear lube is another good investment for this problem." -http://www.240sx.org/faq/index.html

this happened in my s14 over long trips. it is the fluid in the tranny. kinda like steam. it's just coming up around the shiter. it didn't bother me. but if you wanna fix it, check the rubber boot. may have slipped off the tranny. get zipties to fix it.

i am looking for the lower boot for my 5 speed s13, the one that attaches to the shifter shaft and the tranny tunnel. anyone know where i can find one?

dealership can get it for about 10 bucks. they can also get the leather shift boot for about 25.

yeah its about $10 at the dealership

try getting the other boot new, the one thats between the lower and leather upper one, its around $90, and that includes the metal collar, the rubber boot, and the insulator boot...

the plastic trim piece that goes from the dash to the center consol is $94 lol

guess who was at the dealership today? :)

damn i wanted to answer this question...

Its exactly what you guys said...

Its tranny fluid dripping on the exhaust and the fluid is evaporating and coming up the shiftboot. you can get the inner shift boot at a junkyard for free if you pocket it.

mine wasn't leaking. it was just evaporating coming up from inside the transmission.

His question was already anwsered, but I had a friend with the same problem and it ended up being that his heater core went out. Just posted it for someone who searches this thread~
