ive got a 91 240sx with a ka24de motor with just some minor mods (short ram intake, headers, straight through cat, exhaust, underdrive crank pulley, short shifter, and apex'i safc-II). its not much now but i plan to keep it around forever and just keep adding to it bit by bit. ive been thinkin about buying a junkyard head to port and polish and put mid-range cams in. i dont know much about this stuff and was just lookin for some helpful hints for going through the process and any other ideas to make more power.
p.s.-i plan to turbo it on down the road but im trying to get the most out of it in N.A. form first.

dude, trust me, just save up for the turbo... It'd be the wisest choice to make, btw does the safc actually help at all lol since your not turbocharged? BTW welcome and where in Va are u, im in Chesapeake...

i knew that was the first thing anyone would say, but one big problem is the car has nearly 200,000 miles and burns crazy amounts of oil. i wanted to go through and get in good condition before turboing it and figured i might as well make it better than before while im at it. i think its burnin oil because of the o-rings so i planned on replacing them while i put the other head on. i havent done nething with the safc yet but it seems like i could get a little more power out of it if i got it dialed in right. btw im in Waynesboro (a shitty little town near Charlottesville).

Never seen o-rings around a piston. Think the rubber would melt in the combustion chamber.
You can see a small gain with serious headwork, although $1000 worth of machine work for 15hp isn't worth it. With every possible bolt on and electronic trickery you might break 180whp, and that's at a cost of a turbo kit and a spare, low mileage motor. And a shell to put it in.

Save up, small increments of 5hp at the cost of like, 200 bucks each mod won't do justice.
Get CAI for your turbo!! :keke:

Or a header. Heard those work great with turbos.

+1, I had all the na mods...jwt ecu, intake, header, cams, exhaust, even got a 5spd, etc. Na mods suck. Leave the car alone, track down a better condition ka, get a new clutch (something that can take some power...even if you don't have power right away), go turbo. Ka-t is the best money I have ever spent on my car. I should have just done it that way to begin with, this engine was built to be boosted.

does removing the EGR tube and blocking it off do anything for performance? i know its for emission purposes, but i see the egr block off plate and ebay and stuff. just wondering would it really make my car run any better? i have my intake off and just wondering if i should do this before i put it back on.
btw, what does the egr exactly do?

The EGR is the "Exhaust Gases Recirculation" Valve. In actuality...no it wont improve preformance by removing it. What it does is it takes some of your exhaust gases...and recirculates it back into the Intake Manifold. The purpose of this is to burn off more impurities from the exhaust to lower emissions. Yes..this will limit the amount of oxygen allowed to enter the cylinder and might create a rich condition, but the EGR is never open during WOT. It opens usually during steady speed...or deceleration. In conclusion...you won't get better performance from removing the EGR.
