installing a sohc knock sensor... good place to put it?

ok so I have a knock sensor that came out of a dual cam s13 that I want to install in my single cam. Im running an aem ems which can read the knock sensor. My questions is how important is the install location? I know on the duals its RIGHT under the intake manifold and theres a drilled and tapped hole in the block to install it to. thats all fine and dandy but the sohc doesnt have that.

Does the knock sensor have to be mounted adjacent to the combustion chamber? I.E. do I HAVE to mount it right under the head and at the top of the block? Can I mount it using one of the bolts that hold the intake manifold on the block or maybe one of the bolts that holds the oil filter mount on the block? will mounting it that far down cause it to not be able to pick up on knock that well?
am I going to have to practically rip this motor out to drill and tap a hole or weld a stud to the block so I can have accurate knock readings? how much does it REALLY matter?

I'm not sure on the procedure on this one, need to talk to my dad on it, but as long as it's mounted to the top of the block it should read properly. He has a shortcut that relocates the knock sensor from under the intake plenum to one of the mounting brackets that cuts about 5 hours from the time to do it on a Quest minivan. This should work for you as well.

Toss the shock sensor, and get a proximity sensor. You can pretty much mount that under anything plastic. But must be exposed to the cabin.. ie arm rest or something.

lol man i know sohc and knock can be somewhat merged together to make shock but come on man you gotta read atleast a little bit first :rolleyes:

Shift, what is it your talking about? did the quest come with a knock sensor? do they regularly fail and thats what he does to replace them or is that something hes done before when installing one? any pictures of what you mean?

I mounted mine on the back of the head, but we think it'll pick up clutch noise, so I'm probably going to to mount it where the dohc one is mounted, but JB weld the flange in place. Hopefully it holds. It doesn't weigh much so I don't think it'll have a problem. Since it really just needs to be close, it'll be fine.

Yes the old style Quests have a knock and they are a bitch to change. Just mount your new knock sensor to one of the support brackets for the intake manifold. All it needs to do is pick up variances in the firing pulses of the engine.Anywhere on a piece of metal that is mounted on the block will work, but you ahve to place the sensor within 2 inches of the block.

I wanted to jbweld originally but everyone is telling me it wont stay on with all the heat cycling and vibration. I was just going to glue the nut and call it a day but i dunno. what about wiring the thing? is it just 12v and ground it to the ems knock input channel?
