I got a 91 with a ka24de that I just overhauled. During the summer I spun a rod bearing and had to tear the entire engine apart. I took it to a machine shop and got the block machined, cylinders honed, a full head refurbish, valve job. I also took the liberty of buying refurbished camsk, new piston rings, a new timing kit, and a new cap and rotor. pretty much the works. Got the engine assembled on a work bench and then dropped it back in the car(which is easier then putting it back together in the car). After getting everything back together the damn thing wont start. I've looked at the JWT site and many forums but can't seem to gather a solution. I'm pretty sure it's my timing since I have air, gas and a good spark. But i've followed every step in getting the timing set. (Note: The timing kit i bought came with new rails, tensioners, cam gears and chains. the chains dont have any markings at all that would line up with the cam gears. is this problem?) I've set the crank pulley at 20 deg ahead, made sure #1 is TDC, then set the distributor at #1. all it does it crank but wont start. Do i just need to f with the timing by advancing or retarding it to get it to fire? I've gone over and under the car several times and haven't seen any disconections, leaks or breaks so I 'm certain it just timing. Any suggestions?

Why don't you go down to Boulevard Datsun (Boulder Nissan) and try to talk to one of the techs. This would probably be the quickest and easiest way to figure out your problem. PM me if no one there will talk to you and I will talk to my Dad for you (Nissan Master Tech). It does sound to me like a timing issue. When I re-did my timing chains I bought a kit as well. Did you buy it from the warehouse on Santa Fe and 6th? If so, there should be 2 dots on both chains. These marks are where TDC should be on the chains. Hope this is helpful.

maybe i'm misunderstanding things but
if crank is 20 degrees BDTC
#1 cylinder is not at tdc
the way i set my timing after swap is
crank to tdc (NOT to 20 degrees)
rotor ready to fire on #1
after this we crank. if it doesn't sputter, we start advance or retard the distributor until it sputters or starts. at that point, you need to pull the dist and advance or retard by one tooth until it starts and runs with a decent range of adjustment. then you pull out the timing gun, disconnect the tps and set to 20 degrees, etc.

The kit I bought came from online and was packaged in CA. There was absolutly no marks on the chain in the way of timing so we just lined up the chain as it was in the picture being that the dots were on the middle of the link.
I guess when I say #1 at TDC i mean that it is at the firing position, not quite at the top but close. Do i just need to mess witht he disrtributor till it starts running?

Timing needs to be at 0 and #1 cyllendar needs to be at tdc. Those 2 dots you speak of are the marks I told about in my 1st post. They mark TDC on the chain.
