View Full Version : '91 faster than a '97?

Got two questions for all you 240SX gurus!

I have a base model '91 fastback (120k miles) and a base model '97 240SX (40k miles).  The 91' seems to be quite a bit faster, especially when doing hard accelerations on the highway.  Is that normal?  I know the '97 is about 200lbs heavier than the '91, but I don't think it should make that much of a difference.  The '91 is out of commission right now so I can't do a GTech test or anything.  Can someone enlighten me?

Also, when I floor the accelerator on the '97, there's a squeal for about a second, sounds kind of like a belt slipping.  Can't really tell where the sound's coming from though.  Anyone run across this happening on their cars?

i dunno about the squealing noise, but i know that the '91 has a more aggressive cam profile which could account for the better power. &nbsp;i am selling some '91 cams from my car, you could drop them in the '97 and get some more kick out of it. <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/thumbs-up.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=''>

it's true the 97 is heavier, but the 97 is tuned better for mid end performance as well. &nbsp;if you look at the stats for the two, they performace about the same. &nbsp;i think the reason is because the car's design, for example... u going 50 in a prelude feels fast, again, u go 50 in a McLaren it feels like you are crawling. &nbsp;but that's just a comparison to the extream.

Did you do the accessory belts lately? Could be a belt that over tightened, or old... =)

I bought the '97 about a month ago but haven't touched anything on the car yet. &nbsp;I guess I should take a look at the belts and make sure they're all ok. &nbsp; When I bought the car, the mechanic that checked out the car told me that the steering rods(?) are close to needing to be replaced. &nbsp;Think that might cause a squeak?

200lb makes a pretty big difference too. &nbsp; If you get cams from PDM they are supposed to make about a 10hp difference over the stock cams (DOHC) if you have intake, &nbsp;and exhuast already.

i have two friends who both have 240's. one is a 92 hatch and the other is a 97 se. every time they race the 97 pulls as they shift every gear. there must be something wrong with your 97. maybe the belts are not letting it get all of the power out.
