Well I leave for florida in about a half an hour for school. My dad is deciding to fix the timing problem by himself since I have not been able to fix it while, ive had it for 3 months. So right now I just need a few quuickk answers.
I have lined up all dots used the FSM (some of it is not answr all the questions)
The problems I have with it are stuttering at about 3 grand while accelerating. But, if i stomp on it it doesnt do it at all. but if i let it stutter it will eventually work itself out and run normal until i shift again. Basically, it does it eveytime i completely let off the gas.
There is an popping noise at an idle, Eveytime it pops it loses vacuum.
Starting up takes some time also at least 8 tries.
Are the #1 cams supposed to be opposing eachother exactly?
If not how are they facing ( ex-intake at 1 o clock exhust at 3 oclock)
Should there be any kind of slack in between cams on the timing chain?
Thanks in advance,
dave

no, there should be no slack.. well a little, but make sure your tensioner is tight.
the #1 cam lobes at TDC are both facing outwards (towards the fenders)

Thank you sir

welcome, just be carefull 'cuz there are *2* TDCs... make sure you're at the right one when aligning the cams

this is pretty much exactly what is happening with my car except its at WOT and not partial...my timing chain is hanging in between the cams(i can lift it up with a finger) and the cams are at more of an angle than exactly straight across...is that normal or no? it also feels like the compression let loose before TDC(turning clockwise)...thats not normal is it?

there shouldn't really be more than a cm or 2 of free slack.. the FSM probably gives exact specs on it
and they should be pretty much straight opposite from each other.. check.. and then rotate to the NEXT TDC and see if they're pointing straight in at each other
We have interference engines meaning that if the timing were off.. valves would tick and possibly collide with pistons so I don't think you're off.. and compression should be peak AT TDC

yeah doesnt feel peak at TDC...i remember the compression giving away right before because i missed it the first time

maybe you have low compression on your motor all together.. have it checked

yeah but the only thing is that it was really tight for like 90degrees of a turn or somethin...but yeah ill check it out

Sorry I forgot to say that it was an SR20DET redtop. Sometimes I just get so carried away here assuming everyone on here has an SR. (bad assumption)
So I hope we were still on the same page, with my problem being bad timing on an SR!

oh.. umm.. I dunno then. see if you can find a FSM and double check 'cuz I thought it was KA

yeah mine is an S13 SR too...

The FSM I have for an SR20DET doesnt say which way the #1 cams should be facing at the correct timing (15 degrees BTDC)
Does anyone happen to know?
Or remember how they look when you took the valve cover off your SR?
Sorry to drag this out,
Dave
