So Im picking up a 97 240sx SE (supposedly SE) and have no idea which models of the 240sx had lsd. Yes I searched but must not have worded it correctly. Any hints/tips on what to look for in the car, or any signs to tell if it has LSD besides the obvious?

Any help is appreciated :)

Look for a orange tag on the differential. Try and do a burnout and see if you leave 2 stripes. Search.

Open the hood and look for the ABS actuator.

And search harder next time, don't be lazy.

^^^ Werd.

..and why he says to look for the ABS actuator: ABS and VLSD were a package on the SE/LE models...couldn't get one without the other.

I heard SE w/ leather seats usually have LSD.
Also if for some reason the car is up on a lift, spin one of the rear tires. If the other wheel is spinning in the opposite direction, it has an open diff. If its spinning in the same direction, it has LSD.

errr that is not completely correct. I have seen several ABS S14's and S13's with open diffs. It is more likely you could have a LSD if you have ABS but it is not a absolute sign of having one. Some cars did come from the factory with ABS but no VLSD.

Not for the S14 SE...it was ABS/VLSD as a package, or neither.

For S13...dunno. HICAS cars have it, for others it was optional.

If you saw an ABS-equipped S14 with no VLSD...then it was a base model, or the owner didn't know it was a VLSD car - Reason I say that is b/c the VLSD is longer on the snout of the diff so it can house the rear ABS sensor...and I've NEVER seen an open diff with the ABS sensor on it.

So while what I said *may* not be 100% correct for all S14s, it is 100% correct for S14 SE/LE models.

nope Brian, I have seen open diff ABS S14's. I know all about the differences . I have been in the scene for over 7 years.
I have seen open diffs with ABS sensors. I have seen them pulled out of cars at the wrecking yards and I have parted enough S14's . I have seen enough of these things I know. I used to sell VLSD's.
As far as the SE/LE stipulation your trying to make your point with goes it really does not matter, My point was the fact that just because the car had ABS did not mean it had VLSD, that point is correct. Also I do not think your SE/LE stipulation holds true either. It was a choice on the customers part options wise from Nissan.

Yea, i thought ABS and LSD were both options for all cars. Even s14s. You can have ABS without LSD or an LSD without ABS. Depends on how much u wanted to fork out.
