here is the problem, i got about 5-7 hours tops tomorrow to take off my manifold and turbo to find this mystery exhaust leak that i am experiencing. my car has gotten slower over the last week and this "shitty rusted honda exhaust noise" has been coming from my exhaust manifold. unfortunately, i cannot see the leak (i used an extension with a mirror), but i can smell it. So, my questions:
1. can i remove, inspect, replace, and reinstall gaskets in 5-7 hours? i did the engine swap and everything else myself, so i know this car "pretty" well.
2. what are the torque specs on the manifold bolts?
3. will i lose alot of coolant and oil during the removal?
4. what are the USDM replacement gaskets for head/manifold gasket, and turbo/manifold gasket? (i am guessing sentra and 300zx TT respectively...)
5. anything else vital to my success? i need to get all this done tomorrow, if i don't i am screwed :-/
thanks guys!

Screw the torque specs. Just make it good and tight. You can pull it off in 6 hours no problem. Just get started. I hope you have a new exhaust gasket. Steel wool works well to scrape the old gasket off. Get Crackin!!

let me know how your change goes man, I've got the same issue :(
Random exhaust leak noise (however slight) from the engine bay, that I can only hear while under load :wtc:

I got-r-done in under 2 hrs. Let us know how many head-manifold studs you break. I managed to break two at about 1 turn past hand tight, barely any torque.

well i didn't get it done unfortunately. but i do know where the leak is, and what i need to do to fix it. i turned on the car and quickly stuck my hand underneath the manifold and felt some hot air "convection baking" my skin. the leak is at manifold/turbo connection, close to the cylinder head. those two back bolts are impossible to get to without taking the manifold off.
i tried to take the manifold off but stopped when i realized that one of the studs was coming out with the lock nut. i am going to do this another day because i couldn't get my hands on a gasket. autozone and advanced auto are both retarded and don't know shit. so i think i am just gonna order a SS Autochrome 321 Stainless Manifold and divorced dump pipe, and do everything at once. Maybe some high quality fasteners aswell

Regular lock nut/washers/etc aren't gonna work back there. Keep in mind how hot it gets.
You need to pull the manifold to change that gasket. Gasket is from a Z32 300ZX TT (doesnt matter what year) for the manny to turbine. Head to manifold gasket is from a 91 B13 Sentra SE-R.
http://www.stage8.com/ for the locknuts to keep the nuts from backing out on the turbo to manny connection (prolly why its leaking).
Next time search... this has been covered many times.
Set aside a day to do it. Trust me on that. Don't rush it.
Good luck

well, unfortunately i WAS rushed! thanks for the info, but why are u bitching? i hate that shit, u are wasting ur time by telling me to search, where as instead, u could have ignored my post. and also, i said i was going to use QUALITY fasteners, there was never a mention of "regular" anything. i am probably overreacting but i have a ton of Thermal & Fluid Engineering homework that i havn't started yet, so i am in a pissy mood. anyway, i am planning a whole day for this operation, but it pains me to drive my car back home from school with a manifold leak. whatever...

This is probably the most common problem for a new SR. It sounds to me like you lost one of the nuts/studs to the turbo. Replacing the stock turbo gasket is probably a good idea as it's a crush style copper gasket, but its nearly impossible to blow one of those. When removing the turbo, you will lose quite a bit of coolant, but oil will just dribble down the block a little bit. One option that worked for me for keeping those nuts on was jb weld, litle blob on the nut/turbo stopped them from coming loose, but are easy to crack with a wrench when you have to take it apart again. Or you could get the stock plates from a Z32 from nissan, those are probably the easiest options. As for the stud coming out of the block, happend to me twice, just be careful taking them out, cuz if u stap a snud its gonna be a bitch to drill it out when the motor is in the car. good luck!

all the nuts are there, nothing is lost. funny thing is i can hear, smell and feel (ouch) the exhaust leak, but i can't see it. i even put a mirror thing with an extension down there and everything seems fine. maybe something is cracked? i dunno, but i do know that i gotta take everthing apart to really see whats wrong. this leak has really slowed my car down and made it sound pretty shitty. i'll keep inspecting it... thanks for the help guys

That same gasket blew out on me, the bolts were tq'd down but it still blew out. I pulled the whole turbo, manifold, turbo extension, and downpipe out as one!

Hey, guess what?
I told you exactly what you needed and you're saying I'm bitching and wasting my time?
If anything, you wasted your time by posting this thread instead of searching, as this has been covered numerous times.
