View Full Version : Starting college, any anti-theft ideas?

Starting college (UC irvine) in a week or so. I'm still debating whether I should bring my car though. It does have some 'okay' parts to steal (like the jdm turn signals and jdm fogs, both very easy to steal. I have a system). Hmm, I guess other than those parts, it's your typical 240sx. :D ...I may get another set of wheel locks (so I'll have 2 different types of locks for my wheels) or maybe I was thinking of just getting some stock SE wheels and putting them on.
Well, question is if there are any ways to deter thieves from jacking my crap. I know for a fact that it is a problem down in irvine since my bro had his system jacked @ UC Irvine and we've heard stories about friends and students getting their shit jacked. I've got a steering wheel lock, Python Alarm (which honestly doesn't do shit except make a bunch of noise), and thinking of getting that Auto-lock as well. However, my main concern is that people won't jack the whole car but jack parts off the car :-/
Been thinking of getting a car cover+lock (maybe deter them asses a little?). Any way to lock down the turn signals/fogs? I'll probably take another look at my bumper/turn sigs/fogs and see if there's another way I can screw in the turn signals so it can only be taken off with the bumper off.
Now only if I had that security system in Hulk Hogan's Thunder in Paradise...haha...electrocute their asses.
Thanks for any useful information!

honestly, if they want something bad enough.. they're gonna get it reguardless of what you do. heres my suggestion. swing like $1000 and drive this:

good luck.

Car cover just means they can bust your windows and steal anything/everything inside without you seeing a broken window. Fuel pump shut-off with a hidden switch is a good idea for stealing the whole car. As far as parts go, if someone REALLY wants them, I don't think there is anything you can do to stop them.

it just depends on how far you wanna go. alarm is good. club is good. clutch lock is good. but nothing guarantees they wont jack your car.
you can add stuff
-detach steering wheel
-swap locks with another 240 owner
-wire in a kill switch
-take some fuses with you, or hell - take your whole ECU
no matter what you do, at the end of the day they can still tow your shit away.
unfair but true... from your sig i notice its gonig a rb25 swap? IMO, i would just leave that shit at home and take the EX. (btw i also drive a civic and a 240... lol)

I am about to start at UCLA in a couple weeks and i have the same dilemma. I am not even bringing my car i'm leaving it at home because parkig is wayyy too much/difficult there. But i would be worried just leaving my car there over night, people are shady and thieves will do anything to get what they want.
Lucky 7 has the best idea, just buy a little car for 1-2 grand and drive that, you dont care about it so if it gets jacked no biggie, dont even ahve to wash it because its a pos. I am going to try and find a daily driver that just works, all i need.

yea, I could agree with you guys. If they want it that bad, they'll get it some how. I just want to explore every type of security to give them a harder time. Anyone can take a philips screwdriver and unscrew 2 screws and unplug the turn sigs. But if I can screw the turn sigs in in a hidden spot, it'll just slow them down and maybe discourage them and they'll give up if they can't get it in a short amount of time. Bro gave me an idea to find some allen (hex) screws and use them instead. It's a small deterent, but if it dissuades even one casual theif that only happenes to carry some screwdrivers around, that few bucks for the allen screws was money well spent.
i'll probably install some type of kill switch soon. And hopefully UCI doesn't only allow head-in parking. I'll backup my car into every space so they can't tow that shit (or atleast it'll be a shitload harder for them).
Anyone have any suggestions for the detachable steering wheel?
Thanks for the replies guys,
Chris
BTW, I probably can drive my mom's accord for awhile. I'm on the irvine's baseball team so I'm not even sure if I'll have time to make use of my car and the 200 dollar parking permit per quarter. =\

the hex bolts are a good idea. but if i were gonna steal your signals, and i saw they had hex bolts.. id come back the next night with the proper tools. thats just me though..

I went to UCI, and the area is a pretty nice. But it's still a college campus, so expect your car to get fucked with. I also vote for a cheap daily driver.

Daily driver for sure if you can, shop around and find one that's easy and cheap to fix when it breaks.
If a daily driver isn't an option and somebody wants your car, or pieces of it, they will likely find a way. Doesn't mean you can't make it harder for them though. Try to only drive it around and park it publicly during the day and try to park off campus (if possible) in busy lots (chances of accidental damage goes up, but very unlikely someone will mess with your car in a crowded parking lot in broad daylight). What will really help is don't show off your car, it's no fun, but people won't steal what they don't notice. Turn down your stereo and your sub(s) when in slow traffic or parking lots. Basically just pretend you have a normal, nothing special car, drive and park it accordingly and hope for the best.
P.S. with a decent alarm, some creativity and wiring know-how you can even leave some "surprises" for anyone who tries messing with your car. Nothing special, but maybe enough to scare them off if they try anything. Just let me know if you want any ideas, and I'll post some that I know of.

lol, some of us drive around in the "beater s13 coupe"
:) who says you cant daily a project car? luxury is for bitches :)
get one of those 2 way alarms, and the more range it has the better. i have one myself and sometimes it helps, but then again sometimes u get no signal. if ur willing to spend lots of money u can get that one alarm that uses like satellite and can pin point ur car anywhere in the world or whatever. or i say u get a quick release hub for ur steering wheel, and get a cool racing steering wheel so u can carry it around school and look badass haha.

i always engage the fuel pump kill switch and always park near the most highly traversed areas of the parking lot but still far enough away that people wont hur tmy baby. basicaly, at the mall like where a busy entrance is then hike a few hundred yards to the front.
if your car is the only one out by itself 100 feet from anything under a big light with cars passing by every 2 seconds a thief won't even think of touching it.

i've got the viper two way car alarm (sorry, it's not python..just checked...it's under the same parent company so i always get them mixed up). the range on the thing sucks ass (1/4 mile....but if there's interference....ur screwed)....looks like im gona look forward into borrowing my mom's car for a year until i get myself out of the dorms and into an apartment...damn i'm gona miss my car though =\...
looks like my options are exhausted as of now...not too sure if i want to take the chance.

Just watch out for the not-so-casual theif who is inclined to destroy whatever he's unable to take.

I did a few things on my S14 to prevent total car theft.
I moved the battery to the trunk and disconnected the remote lever. Now I have to use the key which makes it tougher to cut the battery and kill the alarm.
I take my Emanage out sometimes, which makes it run rich as hell, with no MAF signal, and no spark (pretty much kills any chance of starting it up).
I have an alarm installed.
Switched from a nice Eclipse deck to a stock Xterra radio (make interior stuff less desirable).

if you dont have the money to get a beater car and you have to drive your 240 just get a good alarm with trunk and hood pins and power door locks, remove the rod from your driver and pass side door locks so only the alarm will open the car. but leave the trunk one so that if the alarm dont work you can get in still, get a quick releace steering wheel and 2 or 3 kill switchs. i have all of this and i take my steering wheel and my igniter chip with me into class and work.

You guys are funny. Spend the extra money and rent an apartment with a garage. There is a pretty nice and cheap complexes all over Jamboree. And with this, you can also get a chick over instead of ejaculating to your sig :naughty:
