Hello everyone. im new to the site but here's my dilemma. I currently own a 97 eclipse gs which is beautiful and ive tailored it to my liking. Ive visually got it where i want it and have only tapped into the performance a little. But recently ive been looking at 97-98 240sx 's i am completely consumed and fascinated by them. they are so sleek and mean lookin. I am at a deciding point. do i sell my eclipse and indeavor into the 240sx world or should i keep the eclipse and go all out on the motor? if i decide the 240 route are there any usual mechanical defects or problems that tipically occur with them that i should be aware of.(Eclipse's are reknown for "crankwalk", hondas get honda rust above the wheelwells.) any info is much appreciated. :newbie:

i would say go with the 240. just a lot more fun to drive and all. or if ur happy with ur eclipse and done what u like, i say u drive it a lil more so u kinda get tired of it. then start all over with a 240. its great driving a nice looking/fast car but fixing it up is also half the fun. just my thoughts...

well im not sure if he will find any info on 240sx vs eclipse in search.. but tech specs are all over the net.. you know i think you should stick with your car. for one your crank isnt walking and the 240sx has less of an aftermarket back than the eclipse... unless you have a good amount of extra money to spend on the 240 then your going to notice that decent parts are hard to come by and expensive. and besides your gonna be out all that money you spent fixing your eclipse up.

i suggest buying a new hood and front bumper.. new paint job.. make your car new again to you.

Battleships. The 240 is one of the best bangs for the buck. DSM is good but the tranny's take a crap. I have owned a stealth r/t (1 trans after 2 years) and a Galant with a with a RS 4g63 (2 tannys in 1 month). I am not too fond of dsm's after that. Go with the 240. You know what they say; Once you go 240 you never go..... back? black? I forget the phrase, nm.

stick with the eclipse. Easier to modify and make quick. And the 240 has too many problems to list.

Keep the Eclipse, with any luck you'll be able to buy those new Evo 4G63s from ppl who'll be wrecking their Evos in the next few years.

id say go all out on the motor. keep the GS. uve already tailord it to ur liking. 240 isnt worth the money and you wont get much speed out of it without a LOT of cash. you can fix up ur GS motor a lot easier with the money you will spend.

due to lack of searching i will give you a quick summery of what has been discussed in years and threads prior.

THE BIGGEST PROBLEMS WITH DRIVING A 240 ARE STATIONAIRY OBJECTS

other than that, the amplifier?? for the auto windows like to take a crap.
anyone think i missed anything?

Also, if you want a SILVIA, you're shit outta luck, they don't sell those here.

The GS's weren;t prone to crankwalk. sell your gs and get a first gen eclipse/talon/laser gsx get a 50 trim turbo... not sure if they came out with dsm link for the first gen's yet but get that when they do and afmic and you should be pushing out a good 350 to the crank.

Personally I think a silvia of any year is better than any eclipse. They're more unique (around here anyway, everyone has an eclipse or talon around here for some reason), and I think just funner to drive, but that's just me. But you will spend alot more money to get parts and it's more expensive to buy the car itself. If you've already put money into your eclipse and you like the car, I'd say just keep it. If money is no issue and you really want something new, pick up a decent S13 or S14, or a 240 and swap in a SR or turbo the KA. In any case build the car that you want the way you want it and forget what everyone else thinks.

dude, you have an assload of $$ into the eclipse. finish the job. buy a 1G 6 bolt motor and swap it. buy a GST tranny, youre all set to go. it will feel like abrand new car right there. it will feel 100x's faster with a stock 4g63 in there. then you move up on power from there. it will be the most cost effective for you, and i dont think you will be dissapointed.

Thats a big difference. The only real similarites between the two are non-turbo sports coupes. Wait... they are very similar, come to think of it. Non-turbo with turbocharged big-brothers. Pretty good looking, too.

However, do you know the troubles with turbocharging a non-turbo GS? You have to buy basically the exact same things you would to turbocharge a 240. You need either a KIT or a motor-swap. And, motor-swaps in the GS are a pain. Too many of my DSM friends have sworn they will never do a motor swap again. The 240 is a lot easier in that regard.

But, I'm more of a fan of keeping the stock motor and turbocharging that. And both are going to give you the same challenges. Both engines have the same weak point: the pistons. More specifically the ringlands blow through when you start adding lots of boost.

As far as looks? That is going to boil down to a personal preference. The 2G DSMs are very good looking, especially the later models. I'm a huge fan of the 2G Talon, but the last year 2G Eclipses are very good looking, as well. But, the last year of the s14 is really frickin' hot.

But, RWD > FWD. Plain and simple. If you are going to be drag racing, circuit racing, autocrossing, or road coursing, I prefer a RWD setup. Not to say you can't be competitive with a FWD setup, but you just have to ensure you work hard to correct the pushing issue. (Bigger tires on the front vs. the rear usually help the feel and inspire more confidence in the turns on a FWD).

I'm a HUGE fan of the 240sx and the KA motor. I'm in the process of buying my parts to put a turbo on on my KA powered S14. So, of course, I'm biased. But, that's not to say that you should listen to me.

If you had a 4g63, I'd say stick it out. The problems of a DSM are one thing, but the strength of the motor combined with the cheap parts = a very good thing.

The KA motor does not have any problems, per se. The aftermarket is catching on, and there are a lot more options then there were even a year ago. But, its still a little slow. Especially compared to the DSM world. But, if you go SR swap, well, there's 16 years of experience and aftermarket support right there. The problems you encounter with the 240sx are the same ones you'll encounter with any car once you start doing major modifications.

this one works a lil better.

stick with what you've got, switching projects always puts me too far behind, and now I've started back on my first project car that I could have already had 2 years into.

interesting how all the pro-S chassis ppl all have about 20 posts or less... perhaps bandwagon jumpers feel more at home when others share their opinions.... oh wait, they're BANDWAGON jumpers!!! OF COURSE they do! LOL :)

On a serious note tho, ya, if you'd done so much work to the eclipse, and you're at the crossroads of different project, or begin power mods.... WHY in the name of god would u want to start over?! That's just stupid. Finish one project before you start another... 240sx popularity is a trend, nothing more. I don't think a single person here, veterans and newbs alike, would dispute the fact that 240 popularity won't last a whole lot longer, there just plain won't be enough of them to go around. The DSM market has exponentially more aftermarket support than the S-chassis have had, or will EVER have in america... you're a little late for this particular bandwagon, but if you wait just a bit... you'll prolly get your DSM finished about the same time the next "big thing" comes along... at which ponit u could get some good $ for the eclipse and start new.
