View Full Version : SOHC KA-T Finally Done!

Just this past Thursday I finally put the car back on the road, turbo setup complete.

I'm running a freshly rebuilt T3 from a Z31, currently at stock boost, 6 psi.

Nearly everything you see was made from scratch by myself in my garage. This includes the downpipe, complete exhaust, intercooler piping, etc. These peices are all 18 gauge mild mandrel bends, TIG welded by myself.

I'm running an S-AFC with 370cc injectors from a CA, resistors wired in of course. Tunning was done with my PLX Devices M300 wideband.

The car runs absolutely great, no bogging, stuttering, or hesitation of any kind. Infact it runs just like stock, other then the occasional backfire.
14.7 in cruise/idle, 11.6-11.8 in boost.

This is my first attempt at turbocharging any motor, and I think it came out pretty decent.

Here is the car, pig nose chopped nicely for the front mount.

Here is the motor & turbo setup.

Here is the downpipe and exhaust, made completely from scratch. Both 3", no resonator. Sounds quiter then an NA with a 2.5" and resonator. Nice deep tone, absolutely no raspiness.

Here is the fancy cold pipe routing in order to avoid relocating the battery.

Here is the gauge pod and console. The gauge pod isn't pushed in entirely since I have to clean up some wiring behind it. Once fully in, it will be completely flush.

Now the neat thing is that the A/F Gauge is wired to show me my wideband signal. :D

Here is the wideband sensor, along with the converter that allows my A/F gauge to display the wideband signal.

I boxed in my rear lower control arms with 16 gauge sheet, much stiffer.

http://img318.imageshack.us/img318/5872/rearcontrolarm5lh.jpg

Some of you may remember the 18mm spacers I made a few months back. Here they are on the car. Open wheel racing anyone?

http://img318.imageshack.us/img318/6919/flush3lf.jpg

And finally, here is my TIG welder. Don't let the size fool you. It's a Miller Maxstar, 150A max, penetration good for 1/4" steel plate.

Looks awesome. It's always baffled me, though.. do you keep the vaccuum lines connected to the intake track where they were before, or do you move them infront of the turbo, so they are always in "vacuum mode".. I imagine it wouldn't be good to blow pressure into them.

krustindumm

Excellent fab work!

Chernobyl: leave the vac lines as they are for most setups. high HP may want to relocate (or remove) PCV and EVAP.

Thanks for all the kind words guys, much appreciated.

It was a long haul this summer, lots of sweat and blood went into this setup. It's nice to see it complete.

As for the vacuum lines, yes, most of them are connected as before. With the exception of the crankcase breather, which is routed to the intake, since you don't want to pressurize the crankcase.

After seeing what you did really makes me think twice about swaping out that old SOhc in my car. Is it possible to display what kind od horsepower numbers you are making?

You just retarded the timing back 3 degrees right? or are you controlling it with something?

Man that looks unbelievable. Keep up the good work. Let us know when you've stocked an inventory of IC piping.

Very clean install. Besides the FMIC it looks very low key. I've seen a couple other SOHC turbo setups on 240sx.org that look a lot more bling bling, i like your's better, cops could pop ur hood and not realize a damn thing.

Have you completed tuning at all? When do you plan on posting a sound clip and dyno sheet?

Fantastic. Excellent work. Quality looks top knotch. The best thing is that you look like you actually put some thought into it. Not just going off what you read it Super Street or whatever. You put some thought into what you want to do, took enough time, and made it look just outstanding.

Bravo.

fucking WOW. GREAT WORK. Those bends are professional. You have a mandrel bender in your backyard ?! hahaha. So... if I need some stuff fabb'd... would it be ok to ask you? ;)

Looks good, are you sure you want the cold pipe that low?

Some thing you run over could ruin your day.

Also whats up with S13's looking like they have + camber in the front? Mine looked like that as well.

Have fun with it.

I also like the re route to save the front battery. Good idea for canadian weather. Really good setup, very low key. S-AFC and a wideband, great for at home tuning.

Gotta love reading comprehension.

Hint: He fabricated it all himself. It's all in the op man.

Yes, I know that (i have reading comprehension skills)...I was referring to the original bends and tubing.

veeeeery nice, veeeeeeery clean, 5 months later, hows it runnin?

Titan
02-06-2006, 06:51 PM
Whoa, I didn't notice this was bumped.

Thanks for all the compliements guys, the car runs great after 5 months. Absolutely no problems with the turbo setup thus far, even through this canadian winter.

Looks good, are you sure you want the cold pipe that low?

Some thing you run over could ruin your day.

Maybe it's the camera angle, but the lowest point on the cold pipe is actually the same distance from the ground as the front braces. I haven't hit anything so far.

I'm doing a few additional projects for the car right now, I'll post them when they are complete near spring time.

200,000 km... which is approximatly 120,000 miles.

No rebuild, I did however pull the head 2 winters ago to replace the valve seals and press in some new valve guides.
