i have a 92 240sx fastback, im wondering where is the best place to set the jackstands. everywhere i tryed something always gets bent by the jackstand, even where the manuel says for my car, it got bent. Im wondering if any one knows where the best place is to put the jackstand without bending something underneath my car?

Ok, for the front: Lift your vehicle with the saddle of your floor jack on the radiator support frame. It's where your front stabilizer bars bolt to the chassis before connecting to the suspension. Right in the center is best. Support your vehicle on the engine crossmember.

For the Rear: Lift your vehicle with the saddle of your floor jack direclty underneath the rear differential. Support your vehicle on rear toe mounts, directly in the center of the mounting caps without damaging the nuts located there.

Good luck =)

Well, personally, you know where you use the OEM scissor jack on all four corners?

there is a tiny rectangle, around 2x0.5'' in size , and its right behind the lip that travels from the front to the back of the car (the lip you use to lift the car with the OEM scissor jack).

I put the stands on those. We've done it plenty of times. It's very rigid. The thing is, you must use extreme caution and I really wouldn't recommend it as the guaranteed safe place to put the stands. It's such a small contact area that the jack could easily slip off depending on the saddle design, etc.

The best and safesty place to put it is where the FSM recommends...directly on the lip. Even if it gets bent, and least you are not taking a risk. If you prefer to save that nice welded lip, you can try to find attachments that clip onto the stand saddle so it will have a groove to fit the lip into.

The worst place to put it is on the frame rails (closer towards the center of the vehicle, runs longitudinally on either side of the vehicle, is made of very thin metal), also called the "side member" in the FSM.

While people may say that no real damage occurs if the frame rails get bent, people forget to realize that thin and "structurally unimportant" frame rails may do more than people think. Someone can correct me, but it basically acts as sheet metal which triagulates the bottom frame seciton of the car, which makes the frame more rigid overall. Basically, its a vital part to frame rigidity (if you care about that).

Please take my post and any other post with a grain of salt...

turdz beat me to it

jack front : cross member
jack rear : diff

stands : on the 'lip' or on those little rectangle things. i used to put it on those but i got paranoid it would slip off.

i always wanted to get some stand adapters, but i could never find any. if someone has a link, post it...

i made my own stand adapters out of a cut up 2x4, id definately like something a bit sturdier like those attachments in the fsm.

edit: anyone tried these?

I wish I had never put the jack under my frame rail.

As a n00b, i relied on the FSM to determine where to place stands and for quite some time I always placed it on the end of the frame rail (in the proper area as per FSM).

Now my rail ends are showing signs of deterioriation. :(

Im starting to put it under the tow hook and engine x-member.

Well, jacking points have been covered... Front Crossmember and Diff. As far as stand points, I personally use the front crossmember (one on each end) and the subframe in the rear. The big loops that loop down under the axles work great for jackstands, since my jackstands heads are curved, they sit right in there.
