when racing? When is a good time to shift? I mean what's the peak HP and TQ at on a 97 240sx with a KA? Don't want to take any chances on losing to a civic hehe.

When you shift you want to be put back to peak torque (4400rpm) which works well for our cars because I believe that would be around 5600rmp. Some say 6k or 6.2krpm but I think thats a bit high.

Pratice and when you can feel what is right that is when you compare it to what info is give about powerband. Then when you see that you are in or out of the suggested shift RPM then you tweak it. Until you never faulter again. It takes practice. DSC got it right in the range so pratice that. Do not Dump your clutch because you will waste your time and the persons your racing. If you practice your take off to where you have max power and little to no wheel spin and you get the shifts right you are not going to do bad. If you can pull it off every time then you will more than likely beat someone who has a faster car but can't drive. Practice! Practice! Practice!

for the take off, what would you say is a good RPM to start reving at??? I tried 3, but I get anxious and punch the gas before the clutch is fully off so it revs high then burns out for too long. Would like 2 be good and try not to get so anxious so by the time the clutch is released, it'll be around 3k?

Well I heard something stupid before like 25 and you won't slide?? So if you are the nervous type I would say 25-3000 RPM. If you pratice it it will come. You will know and you will save your clutch. Go out and find a good empty road or area and practice. BECAREFUL though!

I rev the engine high and hold the clutch to where it is almost pulling the car foward and I then pull up on the e-brake until I'm ready to take off. I drop the e-brake and basically let the clutch slide out. It kills the clutch but I take off the fastest if I do it that way. I don't do this on the street though only at a drag meet where I'm going for time.

It'll change depending on what you've done to the car and what gear you're in--how the power band has shifted and how much torque is being put to the ground through the gearing. It feels like my car accelerates best shifting at redline for 1-2, 6200 for 2-3, and 6000 for 3-4 and 4-5 with just exhaust. If I dynoed the car and got the torque curve I could calculate exactly where the best place to shift is for each gear change.
5600 sounds mighty low, even for a stock car...unless the power band is lower on the S14; maybe that's why they redline 500rpm lower than the S13.
Does anybody have a stock dyno/torque curve graph?

Because the 91-92 had the "hot" cams, they are able to go up higher in the rev range without losing so much power. The s14 on the other hand with the "mild" cams, gets its peak hp at 5600 (mines 5700 with injen intake). Therefore you don't want to go too far past that because power drops off sharply....trust me i know. I was racing my buddy in his Countour (which I have beat before) and i miss shifted in 2-3 (went to 6k) and his rear fender was at my door. I was pissed!
