Ok, this is probably a stupid question but o well. I been running my sr w/o an o2 for a while and it runs great. Maybe just a lil rich. Im going to tune my car soon with the safc-2 and i was wondering if i needed an o2 to tune the car?

You're not going to be able to tune it with even a stock o2 sensor. You need a Wideband o2 setup. Leave the air/fuel tuning to someone who knows what they are doing, prefereably on a dyno.

I know that we need a wideband. But im saying i am currently running my car without any o2 sensor. So im asking if i can tune my car without an o2 sensor besides going to the shop and tunning it with theres.

Why the hell don't you have an O2?

My car is running perfectly fine. So the o2 isnt on my priority list.

I assure you that your car is not running "perfectly fine" with no O2 sensor, it is running "good enough" for you maybe, but I wouldn't suggest your continued tempting of fate like that

I have no o2 on my car and it has been that way for about 10 months. I get 28 mpg. I have 600cc inj. z32 maf, with a custom tune on a stock turbo. Upgraded turbo will be going on later in case you were wondering. Running with no o2 sensor has had no ill effect on my car. I get the same if not better gas mileage because my car is tuned.

Basically your ecu relies solely on the air flow meter and does not cut to o2 sensor at part throttle. I have no complaints at all and like I said 28 mpg isnt too bad.

btw I dynoed at 230whp and 252 ft/lbs.

you're right, it does not rely on your 02 sensor at part throttle. Because it does not go off of throttle at all. It goes off of airflow. So with this, you can see how safc's have an inherent design flaw for our stock ecu's, because they determine high and low map based on throttle position. But that's another story. I can guarantee you will get better gas mileage with an 02 sensor, regardless of what mpg you are getting now.

You will be "tuning" in a section of your fuel map that the 02 sensor is not active in, so yes, tuning without an 02 sensor will technically be ok.

You are correct in that I could get better gas mileage if I had an o2 sensor, I am not doubting that. The question is, do you need an o2 sensor to tune your car, and the answer is no. I could probably pick up another 1-2 mpg, but remember I still get 28 mpg which to me is more then acceptable.

Finally i get some good info about this lol. I am getting about the same mpg. Usually last me 3 to 4 weeks in a full tank and i had my car running for over 7 months already. I was going to tune my car with an safc-2 but wasnt sure if i should tune it or not. Maybe i should just fork up the 60 dollar for an o2 sensor? haha im cheap

all the safc does is alter mafs voltage signal. o2 sensor does not come into play at all when using the safc
