View Full Version : Hurricane Katrina Disaster Relief

Ok folks, I know this is a car forum, and I'm ususally the one to keep everyone on the topic of cars, but it's time we stepped up and made a difference.

I'm humbly asking you guys to send a little cash to those who really need it right now.

The paypal address is: ZilviaRelief at gmail.com

ANYTHING AT ALL that you can send is appreciated. We'll be forwarding the final sum to the American Red Cross.
As an incentive, Zilvia will be providing account upgrades to folks who donate, which are as follows:

$10-$24.99 - Usertitle change
$25 - One year premium membership
$50 - 2 years premium membership and Zilvia stickers
$100 - lifetime premium membership and Zilvia stickers
$200+ lifetime premium membership, freedom to change all your information (such as username, registration date, etc), and Zilvia stickers

I realize that most of us don't have alot of money to spare alot of the time, but I also know that the money we DO have to spare goes straight into our cars. I think now would be a good time to take a step back and think about the bigger picture. Which is more important: helping feed and shelter the thousands of your fellow Americans, or getting that cool new doodad or whatever.

Just think about how useless your car would be if your home was flooded, the car was washed away and turned over, you've lost your job because your workplace was destroyed, and you don't have any food.

Anyway, give what you can - you'll never regret knowing you've helped someone.

-Kevin

PS. include your username in the donations so we know who to acknowledge.

Just wanted to add some info right quick:
It's ThatGuy and I who are going to be running this collection. He's using his PayPal account since I'm still doing business with mine and don't want any confusion.
We didn't consult with Mark or any of the other mods/admins (Sorry, guys).
If necessary, premium membership/sticker costs will come out of my pocket.
Nothing donated will be going to Zilvia. Everything donated will be going to the Red Cross.

I want to thank everyone on zilvia who decided to help start this collection. It's sad how many people are not paying attention to this matter.

I will collect from all my family and send all at once by the end of the week.

I'll also see if I can get a few people to match whatever zilvia pools together. Hopefully, they will cooperate.

Anyway, everyone contribute. Like Mr. Mephistopheles said: "you'll never regret knowing you've helped someone."

So far we've gotten 2 donations:

MEisGQdonated $52.40 and stp9154 donated $25!!
Thanks guys. We'll be getting your Premium Memberships setup straight away.
After PayPal fees, we're at 74.55!
I'd call that a respoectable start.

For everyone out there debating whether or not you should donate, go look in your paypal accounts. If you have $10 sitting there not doing anything, send it in. You're not using it now and you'll never miss it.
In the end, it'll help folks get by until the disaster areas are restored to at least SOME normality.

I dont have a paypal account but I will try to get one open to help out. Some friends and family went thru hard times with the hurricanes that hit Florida last year and Katrina was so much worst.
Is it ok for me to post the email address on myspace.com and get some other people to donate?
Please let me know and I will help out as much as I can.

Thanks

That's fine by us. The biggest reasons we're doing a fundraiser and then sending the proceeds along are so we can track who donated what (so we can apply premium memberships, etc) and so we can show what we as a car forum can do for those in need.

I get paid tomorrow, so I'll send a lil sumtin sumtin tomorrow. Hopefully, they can restore some semblance of order down there... Shame to see that, given the opportunity, many decide to steal from their neighbor, rather than try to get through it together.. fucked up shit, whatever happened to the golden rule?

thanks again guys, yeah the news is still not good. heard from frind who has family uptown, some young guys with guns walked by saying they "own the city" which means they aren't trying to get out. its just sad. i am one of the more fortunate ones because i have my family, car, and a place to saty at the moment. this will really help out a lot of ppl. i just want to go back and help clean up now. its just so fustrating!

We've gotten 2 more donations!

theicecreamdan donated $30 (net 28.83) and sykikchimp donated $25 (net 23.97)

This means we've collected a total of $127.35

Not a bad start for just four donations!

Well, I almost had the chance to help out in person, guys. It was decided that other aircraft would be better suited though. I will be contributing to the fund myself this week, but for now I'm just tracking your donations. Thank you guys so much for offering to help like this. I have a few of my Marines who are originally from N.O.L.A. and they were very surprised to hear a group of car guys on the internet were contributing to the Red Cross for Katrina Relief. Thanks Again Everyone.

Money sent, figured my suspension can wait. Im hoping, imma get deployed out there to help since they got us on stand-by since yesterday. So far Travis AFB has sent C-5s loaded with supply, search/rescue equipment and personnel. I feel bad for people in New Orleans but i feel worst for the people in Missippi, I got a couple of friends from Gulfport/Biloxi area who i have yet to get ahold of. The whole base/town has been literally swept away.

kudo's to all that donate. I donated $50 through my work, and bought a "box o' food" at Giant that is apparently enough food and supplies for a family of 4 for 2 days, and I gave some blood.
membership upgrades shouldn't make people want to donate, thats just greed. just go to your local red cross, or almost any larger franchise, and donate.

Kevin, sorry I can't donate to your fund, but FYI I already put in $200 to the American Red Cross directly. If I sell those wheels I'll donate more...

And for those of you wishing to donate, either to this drive or elsewhere, the Red Cross accepts donations as little as $5.00. Just FYI.

slidell is bad, 20+ power poles just snaped with in the first mile i could drive around. there are numerous trees down, we were hit with numerous tornados, the flooding was horrible, we were in the middle of a sr and a ca swap in my friends cars, so im hoping that the motors and everythign are ok.... other than that all of my friends evacuated except for me, i decided to ride out the storm.....boy was it fun! i dont expect to have power back to slidell for atleast a month....hopefully sooner....it sucks bein away from home...

anyways im in the Atlanta/Gainsville part of GA if any of u guys live up here pm me im sooooooo bored! and i need a few parts lol

ANOTHER LIFETIME PREMIUM MEMBER!!!

SaintlyCharBoy sent in $103.30 (exactly $100 after paypal fees - nice work)!!
Tygma also sent in $13.50 ($12.81 net), not just $10.

Current total is: $365.78

I think we'll send off the first donation as soon as we reach $500.

Thansk again to everyone who has donated to this cause. Zilvia is lucky to have you as members.

Wow, it's so great that zilvia is helping out with the relief effort. I know New Orleans is very bad, but the south MS area got hit pretty hard too. My house was taken away, as well as many others in the area. Some of the casino barges are sitting on land now. I'm sure you guys have seen it all on tv though. The biggest problem down here is finding gas. Well thanks so much guys.

I already talked with Kevin on this.... but wanted to give you guys a heads up.

I will post some things on Ebay tomorrow to sell, with all proceeds going to the Salvation Army. Kevin has my permission to post the links in the For Sale forum.

It won't be anything crazy, just stuff for 240SX people (some stock, some aftermarket, some new some used)...

BUT if you are considering making a donation, I would ask you to bid on the items UP TO THE AMOUNT YOU ARE WILLING TO DONATE. And I will throw in free shipping out of my own pocket, so what you bid is what you pay, no more no less.

And if my calculations are correct, I think I can get ~$400+ out of these parts, depending on how "generous" people are.

I'll put up the link tomorrow.

hi, i rarely have time to check on zilvia.net lately... and my world has been a mess ever since this whole thing started. i grew up in Gulfport, MS and just a few years ago moved to New York. my friends and family have all been in touch with me and ive made a couple trips back and fourth. it was really difficult at first wondering if i would ever hear from my mom again. who emailed me from her office in gulfport 2 hours before it hit land. she runs the road department in gulfport so i didnt think she would leave since it would mean tons of work for her after it hit. 4 days later i finally got to speak with her it was a huge relief... and now im dealing with my friends one by one who no longer have jobs, homes and im still trying to get a hold of other family members. i donated through a few places online and im trying to just find something else to do online other than look at pictures of places that i grew up that are destroyed.. and i come here and see this.. you guys are amazing.

thank you

Thank you to the people of zilvia.net for doing this. It is very kind and generous of you. i live (lived) in chalmette, LA. I never thought I would see Wolf Blitzer on CNN talking about it. OUr entire parish has been devistated. Every home flooded to the roof. My shop on the westbank was undamaged but I will have to close anyway. I doubt there will be anyone in New Orleans looking for performance parts for a long time. My family and I are in Houston right now. I went back to NO a couple of days ago to move everything out of the shop. We are more than likely going to move to houston since my wife's company headquarters is here. Very sad times right now.

Anyway, thank you all again. Your donations will help those that need it most.

Well, I finally got around to sending in a donation just now, hopefully this hasn't been forgotten by everyone. I would have loved to donate more through Zilvia, but my company is matching donations dollar for dollar, so the bulk of my donation went through them to maximize the benefit.

I would also like to suggest that the second payment be given to a different organization than the Red Cross. It's not that I have anything against them, but I saw an article the other day that said that the Red Cross has received over 80% of all donations made to Katrina relief efforts, and there are lots of other great organizations out there that could use the money as well.

ps - I forgot to include my username, but it shouldn't be too hard to figure out.
