View Full Version : what to look for when buying a used transmission

I'm searching for a used transmission. This is what I looked for: See if there are any cracks on the case, see if the shaft moves smoothly, check out the switches and see if they need to be replaced if they leak, check the consistancy of fluid and see if there are any metal particles.

How do you know if the internals of a used transmission are good? Do you have any tips in buying a used transmission? Like what to look for instead of the sellers word saying it doesn't grind.

the only way you will really know it works good is when you put it on and drive it. shifting the gears with it out of the car doesnt tell u much. so you would have to go by the sellers word. good luck and please look for leaks comming from front and rear seals.
