On my sohc, I used to get ~21 city, ~18 highway (between Phoenix & LA, but I was going about 85, which was something like 4000 rpm the whole way). However, my car had been running rich.

check to see if ur o2 sensor is bad. if it is, replace it and you should notice a difference in fuel economy. dont waste ur money on that TOrnado crap...that shit doesnt work.

This is probably stupid but:

Has anyone heard before that bad tires hurt mpg? If so, how?

Ian
08-21-2005, 09:45 PM
only a few mpg...but it will effect it

i never get good gas mileage, i'd say <20 mpg just because of the way i drive. HWY isnt too bad though. I drove from Arlington, VA to Petersburg, VA (furthest north virginia to almost North Carolina) and i did it on 1/2 tank of gas or less...so that's about 170 miles

krustindumm

Few? So we're talking about 2-3 mpg here in city driving?

Do you happen to know why?

Ian
08-21-2005, 10:28 PM
more friction...makes it harder to turn the tires...try pushing a car w/ flat tires...it's hard as shit

multiply that over miles and miles of driving...it'll show in your gas mileage

20something, I have not paid much attention to the amount of gas I am putting in my car, because I do not drive very far on a daily basis, generally about 30-40 miles Monday through Friday, only filling up on Fridays and never having less than a quarter tank of gas... I guess I will do some math next time I fill up

I never really checked, but calculating how much gas I used on a trip back from Road America, I got about 27 mpg. And for a good 45 minutes I was flying through traffic going 90+ in 4th. The rest was 75+

28-30 on any octane, usually 93' but due to gas prices ($2.78) and the fact that I'm still on my KA [SR next month] 87' has become my best friend.

the most that I ever got that I tracked was pumping 15 gallons and got 430 miles.. that's both city and fwy driving (80 mph) from Sac to SF to hang out and back.. I was trying to beat my friend's 240 record of 415 miles... haha I think I could of squeezed several more miles but it wasn't risk it..

how the hell do u get these gas milages? most i can do is maybe 350 miles on a tank. The S13 tank is howbig? 15 16gal? 21-24 hwy and city combined.

ssa_is_shit
08-24-2005, 11:11 AM
Every tank, I average just over 30. I drive 220 miles+ to work and back, with about 80% interstate and 20% in stop and go traffic. Wouldn't get rid of my 95 just because of the gas mileage and cheap to repair/maintain.

OdessaS13
08-24-2005, 08:50 PM
hmm about 21-23/gal, 210-230miles on 10 gallons cuz i fill up wen its 1/4 full.

30mpg on highway when the car was totally stock... best mpg I got was 32mpg on the highway.

now with some basic bolt on I am back to 29-30 mpg.

this is a 93 240sx.

My altima has horrible gas mileage --> she is supposed to be the daily driver :(

both Altima (u13) and 240sx have the same gas tank capacity of 15.9 gallon I believe.

I usually use 89. sometimes 93 to clean out the 89 shit.

average 20-21mph with my 90 ka24e. i/h/e/test pipe/ ignition/ msd/ magnecore wires/ iridium plugs/ big fat cam, mobil1 oil. 1 gallon per 1/4 run is nuts, i can usually get a half dozen runs out of a gallon but then again I only do it in 15.9. I wish I got better gas mileage... using the shell vpower seems to net me about an extra 1mpg or so. best thing I did for my gas mileage was going auto-manual which netted me another 3+mpg or so.

I get about 21-24 with an AEM EMS.. depending on how I drive.. no different than when I was running the stock ecu. 250-300 miles b/w fillups is about all I'm willing to do.

The car is rated 21city 28hwy I believe when new.

Blarf, I get around 240 miles out of my tank before I have to fill up again...though my needle is messed up, I usually have two-three gallons left when I'm on empty. I've gone well below empty before for like 30 miles, just like Seinfeld...ha...but a few months ago I was getting like 15 mpg, changed my air filter and started keeping my tires filled up and now I'm getting 20. Still not good enough but eh.

what have you done to the motor? i get around 450miles to a tank in my s14 id probly get close to 500 if i wasnt so lead footed. i average 28-32mpg dependign on how much of that is spent on the interstate.

I only get 350 miles a tank with 87 gas, even though I goto neutral going downhill. Damn gas is expensive :bash:

tastyratz
09-01-2005, 08:26 AM
going to neutral eats more gas than leaving it in gear. when you let off the throttle above (i think its 1800 stock??) the stock ecu goes into a decel fuel trim. i.e. the injectors shut off. you know how your car sounds really different and louder when you let off the gas? thats because its pumping nothing but air.

Var
09-01-2005, 11:57 AM
yes but you're engine braking which means you're losing intertia which means you'd have to gain it back by accelerating more later.

tastyratz
09-01-2005, 01:38 PM
this is true, different rpm levels have different levels of resistance added to things but it doesnt really make a HUGE slowdown when doing it on my car if done right. chances are you might be letting off the throttle to slow down anyways. letting off the gas and not putting the clutch in should be done while braking anyways (unless trying to brake fast)

I get about 15mpg with my s14 on the hwy. and I have a stock KA. Whats the best octane to use right now im using 91 is it better to use lower octane? and also should i do anything else other than switch the air filter and o2 sensor?

ranisron
10-25-2005, 01:52 PM
change your cap, rotor, ignition wire, air filter, fuel filter and clean the throttle body... oh, and a nice oil change.

then you will notice 28+ mpg on the hwy.

in the mean time, search...

Stock, auto KA, only thing I've done is rip out the intake resonator and disconnected the transmission fluid regulator plug for harder shifts.

I'm getting like 17 mpg. Granted it's all in town, but it's far from stop and go driving...mostly just to school and practice and etc, no heavy traffic.

How would I go about checking my O2 sensor?

SoSideways
02-03-2006, 11:55 AM
I've gone about 300 to 310 miles when my fuel gauge's needle is sitting on the last 1/4 tank mark. When I go to put gas in it's usually in the mid to high 11 gallon area (around 11.5 to 11.7) when I do 300 to 310 miles.

That's with some high way driving mixed in with mostly city driving.

On S13 blacktop SR running E5 ECU and fatty O2 sensor.

When I boost I throw a nice cloud of unburnt fuel. Wouldn't surprise me if my fuel pressure was like 50+ psi.

So yeah, I should get higher gas mileage once my fuel pressure is fixed.
