The Vauxhall Astra will have some serious competition in the C-segment style stakes from 2007 if this new Mitsubishi concept is anything to go by. Concept Sportback will get its public debut at the Frankfurt motor show in September, and its dynamic lines preview the dynamic look of Mitsubishi’s next Lancer, which goes on sale as a Focus-rivalling five-door hatchback in 2007.

The Lancer sits on an all-new platform that Mitsubishi claims is flexible enough to spawn a range of models over the next few years, including a replacement for the road-biased four-wheel drive Outlander. This computer-generated teaser image follows a pair of sketches issued last month and reveals the aggressive face of the new Lancer, which will be the first public appearance of Mitsubishi’s future design direction following its split from former ally DaimlerChrysler

It follows the current fashion of a gaping mouth dominating the front-end, flanked by neat slit headlights, with a wedge-like profile rising to the high-shouldered rear end. The sketches of the tail released last month show a diffuser-style rear bumper with twin exhausts contrasting with Nissan Murano-style crossover styling cues. As with the transition from CZ2 concept to new Colt, expect the bulging arches and aggressive aerodynamic tweaks to be toned down for the road car.

Performance fans will be pleased to hear that the legendary Evolution name will return on the next Lancer. A concept version of the tenth incarnation of the four-wheel drive rally-bred saloon will be unveiled alongside the new Outlander at the Tokyo motor show in October.

I will stand on the roof of that car, and use the overly humongous hood vents as urinals.

I worry that platform sharing will force compromises; and the EVOX will be a 5-door hatchback?

They can't make the Evo X a 5-door hatch...that breaks the traditon of the car since it first started. Also 5-door hatches are hot in Europe and Mitsu wants a piece of the market.

Sadly, a lot of traditions get broken. A lot of RWD cars become FWD cars, engines get bigger, cars lose their flip-up headlights. Trend/innovation > tradition

I bet those headlights won't make it into production. They'll probably get bigger like most production models.

we'll see how it plays out in real life, but right now it's reminding me of the new golf, s4, etc.

Not a fan of huge giant grills, functional or not

it may look better finished in reality

and whats this "fresh" 2.0L engine?
It's still the same 4G right?

i like everything but the part on the front bumper that is black... just paint the damn thing... the pic of the red one is the best tho...if it rapes the evo IX performance wise, then ill praise it... otherwise i think the IX's look better...

The fresh 2.0 liter engine is rumored to be directinjection and all aluminum/open deck for optimum lightness/ emissions/ gas mileage. Its the wave of the future for christ sake!!

If they use directinjection I'm not sure how modifying the car will work out for us. Those injectors aint cheap

Sorry to resurrect, but here is an official concept pic and news:

Looks more like a modernized Evo VI, rather than an evolution of the current Evo IX.

I agree with those that said the red one looks decent.. because I think that looks pretty nice. The silver one just looks like.. hm.. an AUDI A6 to me (well, the rear).

oh god I hope not... I really hope customers don't buy into direct injection.. you think injectors are expensive now.. wait till you check the price of DI injectors and they go bad faster.. DI trucks injectors average around $320 each.. x8 for trucks but even at inline 4 your still lookin around $1280 for an injector upgrade?? it will also need some sort of pump to drive them as well.. ecu's are even more integrated.. basically means you run into a wall of dealer only service and dealer only parts basically what bmw has been doing for the past 5+ years.
