Personal opinion, everything you find online will be skewed by someone trying to sell you something...
... Personally? Sony Xplod and no complaints

Circuit City has free shipping on a lot of stuff. But then again you can also just go into the store...
Btw, which speakers would you recommend? Infinity or Alpine?

Circuit City's installers here are a bunch of idiots, I would sooner go to Best Buy, even if it would cost me a little more... Luckily, I can do all that shit myself, so I don't do either.
Elitecaraudio.com They got knowledgable people there.

Alpine speakers I've heard are more of a mellow sound compared to Infinity which are more bright.
I like to listen to speakers at Best Buy and other places with several kinds of music on a burnt cd and then go elsewhere to buy. I always do my own installs. It's not hard but the people at some places make it out to be brain surgery.

my best experiences have been with the guys at local, smaller, reputable stereo shops. the selection at al's and ed's is usually good to listen to, though, but the small shop guys are more knowledgeable.

There is a small shop here that is run by 2 brothers. One knows a lot. The other constantly spews shit out of his mouth.
Listen to everything with music you're gonna listen to. Also, remember that it may not sound the same in the car. The car is a much different environment than an open room.

See, and it is different here, the small shops are overpriced, have seemingly poor product knowledge and would rather lie to you to get you to accept something that you didn't really want and never really asked for in the first place... 2 of the ones around here have a high rate of their customer's shit (and sometimes even their whole cars) being stolen... No thanks, I will continue to do my own shit.

Just know your electronics and look at the materical and how the audio componets are designed and put together...example if its put together with super glue and the materical looks like the fedex box in your closet... oviously SHIT
