Found this on Freshalloy:

I have been researching options for Tranny upgrades for the SR for some time without success. I am on my 3rd SR tranny as I'm sure many of you are and frankly i'm kinda sick of it. I have decided against the T56 or C4 or other american trannies for various reasons.

I was recently introduced to a guy who owns a company that does custom work for race cars and he offered to work with me to figure out a solution for the Z32 trans bolted to an SR. I feel this would be the best solution as the Z32 trannies are readily available and considerably cheaper than the beefy version of the T56, as well as being built to hold 600+hp. Also this swap is somewhat common in japan albeit with the Skyline trans (same thing). To date, the project has come quite far and we are at the point of assembling the modified Z32 trans and test fitting it to and SR.

I'm starting this thread to see how many people would be interested and what people would like to see from this swap. Cost will be around 500..if you supply your own bellhousing as a core and kit will include new tranny mount, bellhousing and all hardware. The kit will allow you to use the stock clutch, but a modified driveshaft will be necessary.

Anyway..i'm really excited about getting this done, so anybody interested..hit me up.

thanks
m

I just thought you guys would be glad and interested in this development of an affordable solution instead of rebuilding or buying used SR trannies.

thats awesome. ive went through 2 trannys, and its a pain is the ass. :werd: i was just going to buy some jdm gears from japan but thats like 3000 + shipping which will take 6 months (probably)... if the z32 tranny can do 600hp then i wanna know how your swap goes... i cant seam to find z32 gear ratios for the tranny... i hope they are a tad bit taller than the sr(rwd) tranny

z32 tranny is fucking heavy. i'd be looking at which chassis this is going into (s13, s14) and clearance in the tranny tunnel and mating a tranny bracket, and driveshaft lengths. good work tho.

$500 for a machined piece of aluminum is recockulous.
I should buy one of those, bring it to a machine shop to have it copied, and sell them for $400 just to get that rediculous price down.

i heard you can swap the gears out of a KA gearbox into an SR

problem solved...if your SR tranny craps out, find KA gears and stick them in

That's old news. Same for CA gearboxes.

I went with OS Giken CrossGears-2, no problems here. I'm not pushing to much power at the moment but once that GT2540 get's in, I'll let ya know how the gears work out....

I have a buddy that has munched 3 trannies at the drags. Gets about 7 runs and they pop. (633 rwhp), so He, myself, and another buddy are all doing the Z32 swap. I think it's the only way to really get it work and hold up. I'll be putting down in the 500-600's as well too, that's why I'm doing it as well.

The Z32 tranny is beefy though, I don't think there is any trans tunnel clearance problems though.

Just to keep folks who may not frequent FA posted on this. The tranny is now in my car, we are hoping to have the driveshaft made up today and to start driving it around by tuesday or wed. No clearance issues at all aside from a small cutout for the shifter, but the tunnel cleared without issue. Check out the link for some pics of it installed.

Do you mean a cross 3 gear kit? How is the noise on that and what fluid do you run. Did you replace the syncro assembly with it?
