View Full Version : timing chain tensioner(s) popped, motor=gone
Yeah, so it finally happend. The tensioner(s) for the timing chain popped and now my motor is gone. I'm going to try and fix it.
What kind of damaged might have occurred in the engine? Anything fixable? If not, I'll just have to go get another KA (no money for anything else).
My fault for letting this happen, the engine rattle was getting louder and louder these past few days, should have done something sooner. Haven't oppend the block yet to see the damage, just want to know what to expect when I do, what to look for damage wise??? Thanks in advance.

unless you got very lucky, most of the valves will be bent, so a re-build on the head at a minimum. Personally, I would dissasemble the engine to assess the damage before sourcing a used motor. Just my .02
So worse case scenario is I have to rebuild the head? Or might there be something else? Anyone have any info (links) on rebuilding the head, I was going to have a friend do the job but he's not going to be able to help, have to take matters into my own hands.
Have to wait till the tow the car home before I can open her up, so I'm sitting here home wondering/worrying/planning....

Worse case scenario is that a valve kissed the piston and it's total rebuild time.

swap the engine. you can have your car running again in a day or two.

how many miles were on the engine?
Its a 95 240sx. DOHC. 136K miles. This car has gotten no loving, I can tell the previous owners didn't care much for maintnance. Maybe I should just get a lower milage KA, dunno...

Well, if the motor wasn't cared for anyway..then it might have other issues? A KA swap shouldn't cost too much, and if you find a good motor it'll easily last a long time.

yeah, ka swap is cheap as dirt, some shops (that does sr swaps) just tosses them away from customers...
depending on where you are, it's probably cheaper to swap ka then to rebuild one.. then again, it would REALLY be nice if you're going k-at and rebuilding it from ground up...

It is my understanding that KA is a none interference motor. Therefore, you should not have bent valves and stuff.

Welcome to my world. My 93 KA just hit 180k and it's been rattling since I picked it up last November. I'm pretty sure that the previous owner knew nothing about maintnance also, since they said the car didn't even run and all it needed was a tune up.

Can anyone back this up?
Haven't opened the engine up yet, just got her towed home today from my job (where it died). Too depressed to open her up, won't have any money for another month to get it fixed. *sigh* :(

My comment is based upon information from my friend who is a Nissan mechanic and he told me that it is a none interference motor and that a timing chain issue should not damage any valves. I am in the same boat you are due to a cam installation mishap so I have some personnal stake in this information as well.

I've seen SOCH KA's with slipped/broken chains with bent valves, they are interferance motors. Happened to me on my old POS hardbody pickup.

I guess your friend has never had a KA open then...
