Do you think its better if I start out with an automatic 240sx FB then convert it to a manual transmission later? My dad gets mad easily when I always talk about driving a manual transmission car or if I try to buy a car that has a manual transmission.
get a better dad.
its not GOOD to have an automatic, but if you're going to swap it later anyways, and can get it cheaper, then why not

Yeah, I'm pretty broke right now to even buy a manual 240sx. :[
tell your dad to stay out of your car decisions. I've seen many lives ruined and money wasted this way. And your mom too.

if its a very good condition s13 fastback i would get it even if it was automatic. good condition 240sx's are getting kind of scarce.
if you are still living under your parent's roof and they are still supporting you and helping you pay for shit, then whatever they say should go.

if u dont have money for a manual 240sx then why did u bother asking whether or not you should buy one?
if you dont have a choice, then go with an auto, convert later.
OR
get a job, make money the hard way, and buy your own effing car... thats what i had to do.

My 240sx started life off as an automatic and i was going to drive it as such and slowly modify it. I quickly became bored and began to beat the shit out of it and then was forced to fix the transmission when it broke. Instead I swapped an SR and the the money pit began...

Why would your dad get mad at you about driving a manual?

I wouldn't even bother with the auto, it's not going to be as fun as you want it, and you're going to be talking about how much you want it, how cool it is, etc. If you're not going to get a manny, and are too lame to do the swap, don't bother at all.

Yeah, I'm going to convert from auto to manual. My friend has a shop so I can assemble the parts there.

He highly recommends me to stick with an auto transmission for awhile. I dont know why.. I'm a decent driver on the stick.

Its not that easy to find the exact things you want for a car nowadays. So why not start with a decent auto 240sx then convert it to a manual transmission later? I dont have much money anyway and I'm getting the job soon. Working on the car little by little is a good thing.

Nah, he still thinks I cant drive a stick.

its not the hardest job in the world, but i had the chance to avoid it altogether; i would. have a down to earth talk with him and make your case for a manual tranny.

tell him you want to drift and wreck ur car into a curb/light pole/ another car/ dog/ person/ person WITH dog/ hooker/ or somthing of the sort. all the while you cant do that with a manual transmission as you will be able to control the car more and wont be able to crash into the above stated, unless you were to have an auto. Why not just go out and buy a car yourself, and not worry about what anybody says? or is daddy buying you the car.

Just pop on an option DVD and say, "Dad, can i do that?"
and tell him that you need a manual to do that. Should convince him on teh spot!! :goyou:

Buy a new Dad before you get your car.
Preferably one like Jay Leno or David Letterman, both of whom LOVE cars.

This is what happens when someone makes all of their decisions, as related to their children, based upon the shit they see on television and in movies. It is a vicious cycle, really. Starts with movies like Gone in 60 Seconds, the ricer in the Civic at the beginning, digresses to The Fast and the Furious, and next thing you know, all the cool kids are street racing and are doing us the favor or wrapping themselves around poles and hopefully dying, so as not to further dilute the gene pool.
Next, you have all these FUCKING magazines with their big shiny "Drift Machines" and selling the same kids the idea that if you don't drift, desire to go to Japan, lust after asian women and, as a result, randomly spout Japanese terms where an english one would have been just fine, then you just aren't cool...
Here's what you do: DON'T get a 240SX, they're overrated and exhibit all the classic symptoms of a money pit anyway. Swapping from auto to 5-speed will teach you that. Have a sit down with your pops and discuss how you are currently being "over-parented" and should be allowed to live. If this conversation ends with one of you being murdered, so be it. If you are older than 18 and have a job, then YOU buy what the hell you want and pay your own way, insurance and such. Just know that if you, in the face of all conventional wisdom, still must have a 240SX, that if you are buying an already running car that you plan to have 5-speed, then BUY a 5-speed.
i personally think starting out w/ an automatic is better...not only that but NOT getting a 240 first. You're bound to fuck up your first car, and you're gonna regret it if it's the 240 you do it to.

Nothing wrong with getting an auto 240 just as long as you convert it later on. My 240 was Auto for practically a year before I did the 5 speed swap, I still took it to autoX as an auto just to learn how it felt. The 5 speed swap is cake anyways, it's just a clutch swap with some extra steps. Don't fear it.
Oh and this is my first car also and it hasn't met any severe damage (hit a snow bank and a minor rear ender).
