I picked this car up about a month ago. '93 Hatch Auto 96k miles. Daily driven. I've added about 1,500 miles. Everything works like a charm. All of a sudden today, It wont hold gears. Out of the blue. Didn't show any signs.

I was driving about 25-30 mph as I always do as I dont really rag on my car when it happen. I'm cruising... I accelerate but it feels like the gears slipping so I ease off accelerator. Press it again, slipping. Depress. Press, accelerates normally so I shrugged it off and continued driving. About after 30 minutes of more normal driving it happens again. This time for the worse. Gears slipping. Car barely wants to move. I begin to hear some metal on metal contact under my car, some grinding. I pull over. Turn her off. Checked for leaks, smoke, funny burning evil smells. Nothing. Trans fluid is at a fine level. Pretty clean. No smells.

Turn the car on again... same shit... Barely drives for a few seconds and then acts up again. So I'm all like :wtf: stupid car.

Barely drove it to my friends house, He's a rookie graduated mechanic. He and I did some messin' around. Nothing works, except... Shifting to 1st gear AS SOON AS I TURN ON THE CAR and taking off. This will let me drive the car only on 1st until I make a complete stop. If I stop. I end up having to shut off the car, turn it back on and repeat the 1st gear process in order to drive.

My friend thinks I may have burnt out the clutch packs in the transmission and that I will need a rebuild.

This happen to any of you before? Please help. Give feedback. Let me know what you think or what has happened to you.

Should I swap in a different AT? Go balls out for an MT? Rebuild the current AT?

Holla Back ASAP! :duh:

How can you blow an auto tranny??? i thought it was impossible. Not like it matters because you can get an auto tranny dirty cheap. Or might as well get a 5 speed swap.

I dunno dude. But it aint working. My mechanic friend says there's like a clutch in there or "clutch packs" as he called it and that maybe they have worn.

After reading up on AT's on howstuffworks.com I can see how it may have gone out. Delicate ass automatic trannies. :(

Sucks, but luckily automatic transmissions are quite cheap for our cars.

The big killer with Nissan AT's is the fluid. Not having the right kind(ash-less non-synthetic) or the right level seems to fubar the shit of them.

Torque converter. Read the FSM.

I dunno dude. But it aint working. My mechanic friend says there's like a clutch in there or "clutch packs" as he called it and that maybe they have worn.

my torque converter just came loose for the second time i had it fixed and it did it again and thats your problem... something about this auto tranny just kills the bolts the guy that fixed it showed me the orig bolts and there were cuts and dents in them all over the place....my car is currently sitting along a road with its flashers on because it dropped again tonight (i have a 92 coupe)

just swap the car to a 5 speed and be done. Its not that hard and you will be much happier.

The AT has been good ever since I swapped in the replacement in August. Slips here and there ever so slightly but I KNOW that its because it's slightly overfilled. I haven't had time to go get it flushed right.

But hey, hasnt let me down yet.

The 240 A/T transmissions are bulletproof from what I hear, try a fluid change and filter (and I stress the filter). You wouldn't do an oil change without chainging the oil filter would you?

this problem is with the converter like i said it just happened to me the converter figures out a way to come loose and you have to either get a new one or weld it in........

My torque converter is fine dude :) It's just overfilled.

When we put this transmission in, we overfilled it. It was slipping gears every time I came off a complete stop. We drained out some fluid and it automatically stopped doing that shit. Now it happens like once a day. But I know that it is still overfilled. I need to either drain some more fluid and make sure it has just the right amount, or go get a flush and filter change.
